Set in the same world as Kenyon's many other books, I felt too often like I was missing something by not having read any of them. Words which by context appear to carry weight didn't because they were meaningless to me. Outside that issue, it was a fairly entertaining read. (

The series has the same level of mythology play Kenyon reserves for the adult-targeted "Dark-Hunter" series, plus many of the same cast members. Just sans the repetitive, badly written sex scenes. The writing is clearly aimed at a YA audience rather than a romance one, but since Kenyon's writing was never difficult to parse, it's more in the subject matter that this is clearly written for younger people than the writing quality. It aims at humor, which is markedly less sexist and homophobic than the "Dark-Hunter" series, but well... it's Kenyon. Still there. (

The author alternated from clunky dialogue and inconsistent characterization to truly funny scenes and interesting ideas. I was past my personal allowable quitting point when I started to get annoyed by the writing, and I was interested in reading more by the time I got to the end. So I guess I'd say it was a decent start and finish, with some problems in between. I'll probably try out another, just to see what happens, but it may be a while.
This was recommended to me by a young male library patron, middle school age, who adores the series. (
