H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines tells of a group of adventurers journeying into unexplored Africa in order to find the missing brother of one of the party. The book became an immediate bestseller after publication in 1885. At the time large parts of Africa remained unexplored by Europeans and the book captured the imagination of the public. This classic work of fantasy begins with scholar Ludwig Horace Holly being visited by an old friend who is ailing. The friend passes the guardianship of his 5-year-old son on to Holly. Fast forward twenty-five years: the hapless orphan is now a handsome and capable young man (Leo) whose past holds a series of remarkable secrets. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these stories. I do not read much fantasyadventure other than Tolkien but these books were both so good that I'd quickly read anything else by Haggard. ( )

4080 She & King Solomon's Mines, by H. Rider Haggard (read 8 Oct 2005) She is an 1887 novel, read because it was bound in the same book with the Haggard book I wanted to read. She is a fantasy and is boring. Leo Vincey is apparently descended from an ancient Egyptian and comes in contact with a beautiful woman hundreds of years old. Leo and she have all sorts of hair-raising adventure but since they are all impossible they do not excite. The other novel in the book, King Solomon's Mines (published in 1885), is a better story. It has some fantasy in it but not as flagrantly. Alan Quatermain and two other Britons seek diamonds in a remote part of Africa. They have a rough time getting there and when they get to the unknown kingdom there is a huge battle in which the 3 Brits take part, on the side of the good natives, of course. There are a few incidents near the end of the book which catch and hold one's interest. There is an eclipse scene, reminiscent of the similar scene in Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur's Court--an 1889 book! So it looks like Twain stole the idea from Haggard, rather than vice versa. These novels were not really worth reading inasmuch as there is so much better stuff to read. ( )

Allan Quatermain is a hunter. Lions, elephants, antelope. Fearless, he is the best big-game hunter in South Africa. And he is about to embark on the most dangerous hunt of his career.

His new employers, Sir Henry Curtis and Captain john Good, have a map--drawn by a dying Portuguese prospector. It reveals a route across the great desert, past a fearsome range of mountain, to the greatest treasure in all Africa--the lost diamond mines of King... ( )
