A little girl gets a new neighbor, another little girl named Zola. Their mothers have already decided they will be friends, but the first little girl imagines that Zola already has a friend - an elephant! She imagines Zola and her elephant doing all kinds of things, and eventually gets up the courage to go next door and knock. As always, Pamela Zagarenski's style is gorgeous and utterly unique (see also Henry & Leo, Sleep Like A Tiger) Zola's Elephant is a fascinating story about a little girl moving to a new town and her mother would like for her to become friends with the girl who's telling the store. This story reminds me of myself moving to a new town as a little girl . I loved the illustrations throughout the book, which I believe would make this book even more exciting for children to read. The illustrator did an amazing job with the dimensions as well as color within this book. As curious as children are they would also like this book because they'll try to guess what can possible be in Zola's big box, which is revealed at the end of the story. Zola's Elephant is a unique story about a girl moving to a new town and making friends, also her imaginary friend elephant. I loved how every other page was only illustration with no words, emphasizing the text from the previous page. The pictures in this book were so captivating in my opinion, because of how much color and detail was used. There is lots of line and dimension being used in this book, and the entire page was filled up with picture and color, catching the eye.I believe that children will really enjoy this story and the beautiful pictures in it as well. I think that the medium is mixed, either colored pencil and/or paint. Zola is the new girl next door and her mother would like her to be friends with the girl telling the story. She imagines reasons why Zola doesn’t need her as a friend since she possibly has an elephant for a friend. The ending will let children know that you never know the truth until you find it for yourself. Children will be guessing what could possibly be in Zola’s big box. The bright and bold illustrations will appeal to all ages. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Imagining that Zola already has a best friend -- a large elephant for a playmate -- and thus the little girl is hesitant to reach out and she thinks Zola has no room for her.
As the girl who longs for company imagines the elephant that Zola owns, her thoughts are rich and brilliant.
This is yet another incredible illustrated book highlighting the thought-provoking way in which a little girl's mind is highly rich and beautiful.
When the neighbor reaches out to Zola, she is amazed that Zola does indeed crave friendship.
