the little red fish by taeeun yoo was about a boy named JeJe who went to an old library with his grandfather. JeJe had taken along his little red fish. JeJe explored the library until he got tired and fell asleep. When he had awaken, he started to read a book to his fish, only to realize that he was gone. JeJe had searched high and low for the little red fish. The little red fish had disappeared into a red book on the shelf. JeJe had fallen into the book trying to catch the fish. He chased a bird and clung to his legs in order to get to the water where his fish was. Afterwards, JeJe had finally caught his little red fish and returned him back to his fish bowl. At the end, he had told the little red fish that they would be back very soon. ( )

I don't see any kid appeal. The words are clumsy and distracting. The pictures are difficult for me to see - and my eyes aren't super old yet. The idea is neat, but it just didn't work for me. ( )

This picture book focuses on a young boy, Jeje. He grandfather owns a library in the middle of the forest and one day, he went to visit. Along on the adventure, Jeje took his friend, the little red fish. Together, they explored each corner of the library and was very amazed. Jeje grew tired and took a nap, when he awoke, he was in the dark. He was terrified and decided to read a book to his little red fish, when he looked up his fish had disappeared. Throughout the book, Jeje goes through many adventures to find his little red fish. The illustrations are not colorful at all, besides the little "red" fish. All the illustrations are black and white. The text is small black print and not every page has text on there. There are a couple of pages back to back that just show Jeje's adventures, with no text at all. This book is very creative, it helps expand the imagination of a child because of Jeje's adventures in finding his little red fish. A teacher probably won't use this as a lesson in the classroom, but can have this book in the library for children to read when play time. ( )

Pretty illustrations and imaginative story, but it didn't draw me in as much as I expected it to. ( )

It's simply incredible that this magical picture-book was Taeeun Yoo's graduate thesis at the School of Visual Arts - talk about promising young students! With its simple tale of a boy, his fish, and a magical journey into the world of a book - Jeje accompanies his grandfather to his work, at the old library in the middle of the forest, bringing his little red fish with him; and, after awakening from a nap, must pursue his elusive piscine companion through the stacks, and into the pages of a dusty red book - The Little Red Fish is also a visual delight. Yoo's sepia-toned etchings, with their occasional flashes of red, reminded me a little bit of some of Edward Gorey's work, in their ability to evoke a world of mystery.

All in all, a delightful book! I was impressed with the dreamlike quality of Yoo's narrative, how (deceptively) effortless the entire project felt. Having already appreciated this artist's work in such titles as Only a Witch Can Fly and So Many Days, despite finding both narratives (written by Alison McGhee) rather lacking, I was especially pleased that this was a book I loved for both story and illustration. Hopefully Yoo will write and illustrate more tales! ( )
