Running Deer and his fellow tribesmen take special care of their land until they lose it to invading white settlers, who wear it out and leave it to recover on its own. The call of the Gray wolf. This story captures the quest of colonial explorers who invaded North America to expand territory. The story begins with a young man named Running deer who goes with his father to set a portion of the forest on fire. This act seems to tame high grass and leaves on their hunting grounds. Then, one day settlers came upon the land to trade goods for a portion of their land. Although some of the men thought that it would be beneficial to trade with the settlers, Gray Wolf (who is running deer's father and overseer of the villagers), declined their offer. The settlers then returned one day to cut portions of the forest. They were then forced away by the use of weapons from Gray Wolf's camp. The settlers returned yet again and claimed their territory leaving them homeless; they also killed the leader Gray Wolf. Broken and Defeated, the clan was forced into reservation camps by the settlers. At the end, Running Deer is troubled by the recent turn of events. He can no longer hear gray wolves or any of the land animals because of the efforts of the settlers to clear their homeland. This was a good story because it is based off of historical accounts of Colonial America. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
