This story started off so strong! I was listening to it as an audiobook and wanted to find out what would happen next. The premise of two girls secretly living as twins in a world were the rule is only one child really drew me in. However, as I got towards the middle and end, it was hard for me to focus on the story. I lost interest. Even though the beginning was great, it was so-so for me overall. There are several noteworthy novels fictionalizing the Chinese one child rule in a future United States. This is a noteworthy addition at the YA level. Identical twins Ava and Mira Goodwin live as one, because only one of them is allowed to survive in their society. They alternate days, one hiding in the basement of the family home, the other sleeping in the daughter bedroom, going to school, and attending social events. They do homework together and debrief their days, as the next day they will alternate roles. This arrangement works surprisingly well, until their cover is blown at age 18. There is a powerful trek across North America, and a brief discussion of the birth and maintenance of resistance movements. Mild violence. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Onderdeel van de reeks(en)The Rule of One (1)
"In the near-future United States, a one-child policy is ruthlessly enforced. Everyone follows the Rule of One. But Ava Goodwin, daughter of the head of the Texas Family Planning Division, has a secret--one her mother died to keep and her father has helped to hide for her entire life. She has an identical twin sister, Mira. For eighteen years Ava and Mira have lived as one, trading places day after day, maintaining an interchangeable existence down to the most telling detail. But when their charade is exposed, their worst nightmare begins. Now they must leave behind the father they love and fight for their lives. Branded as traitors, hunted as fugitives, and pushed to discover just how far they'll go in order to stay alive, Ava and Mira rush headlong into a terrifying unknown."-- Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Kept reading because I thought maybe Past-Me had had some motivation to be excitement, but the writing was pretty meh as well and this kind of just fell flat on every level. The characters had differences that were obviously put in there just to make them different, but they didn't actually feel like different people.
For a moment I thought maybe this would be redeemed when the characters enter Glacier County in Montana (hello, I left my soul there) but alas, there were just location labels being thrown around. Sigh. ( )
