A good documentary on Orthodox spirituality although there are two misleading statements one by theology student John Downie (University of Bucharest) and the other in the subtitled translation of the final interview with a spiritual father. The statement of the theology student espouses a pantheistic view--that is, that "everything is God." This is contrary to Orthodox teaching. Rather, the Orthodox saints recognize that the Creator is NOT the creature, although the Creator dwells within all of His creatures and created things, filling the entirety of creation. The second misleading element is a mistranslation of the words of the last spiritual father interviewed. This subtitled translation refers to "melting with God." Perhaps the word intended was "melding," which implies a loss of personal distinction. This type of Hinduistically-conceived merger with the Divine is not the "union with God" of which the Orthodox speak. Apart from these misleading statements, the video offers us a taste of Orthodox spirituality through a visual experience of the icons and the liturgy and from the mouths of monastics, praying and struggling to unite themselves with God. This union preserves and glorifies us as distinct persons rather than absorbing or obliterating our personhood. ( )
