Sometimes Verity Long would like to forget that she lives with the ghost of a 1920s gangster. But the reluctant housemates must once again work together when a dead detective blackmails Frankie into helping him solve a Great Gatsby-era cold case. Before she can say "bathtub gin," Verity is dragged straight into a raging, otherworldly house party. Worse, every guest is hiding something.

Meanwhile, Ellis Wydell, Verity's living, breathing boyfriend needs Verity's help with a police case of his own. After a dead body is discovered near the pecan orchard, Verity gives her insights, thinking her job is done. But when mysterious pecan pies start arriving at her house, she wonders who might be thanking her... or stalking her.

Between hard-living ghosts and sugar-laden desserts, Verity has her work cut out for her. But will she uncover the secrets behind the pecan pies and dead guys? Or has she stumbled upon a recipe for disaster?

I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book provided by NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I don't remember where I was in September of 2018 but I somehow missed this story at my local bookstore. Pecan Pies and Dead Guys, by Angie Fox, is book 7 in the Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries series. I've enjoyed this read so much I'm now off to find the rest of the series. Pecan Pies works as a stand alone even though it's part of a series. I didn't realize that until I'd finished the book, there wasn't a need to backtrack, it was all well taken care of by the author.

Our lead is Verity Long, former graphic artist turned ghost hunter. Her world has done a 180 several times over but she's still standing. She's got guts, even when she scared spitless she pushes on. I like that about her. Her current boyfriend is hot policeman Ellis Wydell. Ellis happens to be a brother of her ex-fiancée. His mother hates her, to say the least, but she and Ellis are in love and to heck with other opinions. Ellis is written as a good guy, does what he needs to do, isn't a pushover, and takes care of those he loves.

A ghost named Frankie "The German" Winklemann, former mobster, is thrown into this mix as spirit guide to Verity. He's a hoot but can't move on to the light just yet. In the meantime he's got a ghost girlfriend and they go to ghost clubs, it's not a bad afterlife. The ghost hunting is scary and funny at the same time, I laughed a lot.

The best line in book is "I'm here to report a suspicious pie". Don't hesitate to give Pecan Pies and Dead Guys a try. Happy reading.

A clever cozy mystery that is fast-paced and relaxing. ( )

I so enjoy this series. Frankie needs Verity to help him investigate a 1920s unsolved murder so he can get out of confinement--on her property!--and avoid spending his afterlife in prison. Meanwhile Ellis needs Verity's help to talk to a ghost and Beau has a new girlfriend who his mother thinks has way too much influence over him. I thoroughly enjoyed the house party mystery and all its flamboyant characters and its contrast with the closer-to-home, frightening mystery. #PecanPiesAndDeadGuys #NetGalley ( )

I have been wanting to check out this series. When I got the chance to pick up a copy of this book, I jumped at the chance. Although, this is the first book that I have read in this series; I felt like I had established an relationship already with Verity, Frankie, and Ellis. Ellis is the calm under pressure one out of the bunch. Verity and Frankie more jump before thinking and they are more reactive to situations as well. Thus, the reason why make good room mates.

While, I liked the characters, I found the story to be subtle. I wanted more. There was not a lot of mystery or action happening between both cases that Verity was solving. Well for most of the story but the last third of the story did pick up and wrap up the cases nicely. I didn't fall in love with this book but I do want to go back and read book one due to the fact that I enjoyed the characters. ( )

Who knew that the afterlife could influence the lives of so many of the people who live in this little community. The series started with Southern Spirits where Verity discovers that her fiancé is cheating on the eve of her wedding. Verity quickly finds herself out of work and penniless due to the maneuvering of her ex’s mother. All the books in this quirky series follow the adventures of Frankie, a gangster ghost; Lucy, the skunk; and Verity, our unique sleuth and problem solver. This new book in the series opens with an unresolved problem from the previous book, Murder on the Sugarland Express. Verity and Frankie must help a long dead Police Detective solve a case or else the consequences could be dire not only for Frankie but for his new love, Molly, his cadre of fellow gangster ghosts, and for Verity’s home. The previous book had seen a halt in the war between Verity and her ex fiancé’s mother but Beau is now showing signs of breaking away from his mothers influence. This leads to the mother believing that Verity is corrupting Beau. The dramatic relationship challenges that erupt based on the plot developments as the characters struggle through unexplained murder, poisoning, and police intimidation. These layers of complexity are in each and every book of this series with this book providing more depth and details to characters and community. I enjoyed this book especially the expansion of Beau. I received an ARC. I would highly recommend this book. ( )
