"We feature the Haida People. Their traditional territory is located off the northern most coast of Canada in the North West Pacific."-- "Canoe Kids Vol. 2 2016, The Haida of Haida Gwaii is the second issue of a 24 edition series designed as family books for kids all ages. This eight-year project will see the Canoe Kids Team embed with 24 Peoples. The mandate for the full-colour book (nearly 200 full colour high res photographs) is Exploring Indigenous Cultures through Authentic Indigenous Voices. The publication balances culture, equity and the environment in a beautiful mix that reminds the reader of the pictorial quality of National Geographic with a more in depth editorial content. In this issue of Canoe Kids, we feature the Haida People. Their traditional territory is located off the northern most coast of Canada in the North West Pacific. Our first issue came from the center of Turtle Island, namely Manitoulin Island, We then went west to Haida Gwaii then east to Ktaqamkuk. We take great pride in being able to showcase the uniqueness of the original peoples and remind our readers that it is through the words of their own people, each nation can be celebrated. A geopolitical view of the world prior to long distance travel by colonizing forces looked much different than it does today. For example, the borders that now exist between across the Americas were not present 500 years ago. Indigenous people moved freely across what is now a border, and in some communities, even straddled it. Tribal territories were respected and elaborate trades routes existed from east to west, north to south. To begin to understand cultures that have existed for millennia, you must appreciate their world view is so much more than just the last 500 years. As always, we at Canoe Kids appreciate you joining us in exploring Indigenous cultures and territories. We invite you to take this journey with us, to listen and learn from Indigenous peoples who have occupied these lands since time immemorial. Everyone involved in the creation of Canoe Kids believes we are very privileged to do this work, and we couldn’t do it without you, our readers. The Haida People and council kindly assisted the Canoe Kids staff by allowing access to their traditional territory and invited us into their community. Canoe Kids acknowledges the generosity of the People of Haida Gwaii. This second issue focuses on the Haida Nation of Haida Gwaii. In 165 pages the reader is introduced to the Haida People who kindly assisted the Canoe Kids staff by allowing access to Haida territory. Canoe Kids acknowledges the generosity of the Council of Haida Nation, the Haida Museum and the Haida Heritage Centre." --Publisher's website.… (meer)
