Fantasy. Fiction. Mystery. If you thought magic was confined to one country-think again. Trier: famous for wine, Romans, and being Germany's oldest city. When a man is found dead with his body impossibly covered in a fungal rot, the local authorities know they are out of their depth. But fortunately this is Germany, where there are procedures for everything. Enter Tobias Winter, an investigator for the Abteilung KDA, the branch of the German Federal Criminal Police which handles the supernatural. His aim is to get in, deal with the problem, and get out with the minimum of fuss, personal danger, and paperwork. Together with frighteningly enthusiastic local cop, Vanessa Sommer, he quickly links the first victim to a group of ordinary middle aged men whose novel approach to their mid-life crisis may have reawakened a bloody conflict from a previous century. As the rot spreads, literally, and the suspect list extends to people born before Frederick the Great, Tobias and Vanessa will need to find allies in some unexpected places. And to solve the case they'll have to unearth the secret magical history of a city that goes back two thousand years. Presuming that history doesn't kill them first.… (meer)

all right, but doesn't do enough to justify its existence separate from the Peter Grant ones. maybe because the characters are less beloved, the copaganda (theme of the whole series, to be clear) is a bit harder to stomach. ( )

A rivers of London novel that takes place in Germany instead of England, A bizarre death has occurred at a vineyard near Trier that has special circumstances all over it. Agent Tobias Winter is sent out to investigate.

I enjoyed that narration of Sam Peter Jackson quite a bit.

As always, a fun time. I really like that Aaronovitch is branching out beyond London with this and Winter's Gifts. ( )

Tobias Winter is sent to Trier to investigate a strange death involving fungus at a vineyard, with the help of a local police office Vanessa Sommer. There, he encounters wine, defaced sculpture, river goddesses, and a strange group of local men who made good wine their hobby. ( )

I’ve been meaning to get to the novellas in this series, and this one was a fun departure from Peter Grant and the gang in London. The audio version gave it extra zing, with Sam Peter Jackson doing Tobias’s voice in a strong German accent. I missed Kobna Holdbrook-Smith’s voice (as well as Peter and Nightingale), but the different setting was entertaining. I liked the periodic references Tobias made to Peter, “The Nightingale,” and the practitioners in London. Judging by the ending, it seems like Aaronovitch is leaving room for more stories with Tobias and Vanessa.
As much as I recommend the audio, I did get a little lost with names of people and places, since I’m not familiar with German pronunciation. The tone wasn’t quite as irreverent as Peter’s, and it wasn’t as funny, but I liked Tobias and Vanessa, and I would definitely read more. ( )

Gaston was a short, bulky man in his late fifties who favoured tight jeans, studded belts and sleeveless T-shirts, the better to show off the tattoos on his own arms. Only the absence of a mullet or a purple Mohican saved him from a breach of the EU directive against egregious cliché embodiment.
