When John Trent, a dedicated member of the new Bow Street Runners, finds an exquisite carved angel floating in the Thames, he can't stop thinking about it. He tracks down its creator, a sad and quiet young sculptor. But neither the angel nor the sculptor is done with John just yet. The blasted angel refuses to leave him be, behaving not at all like an inanimate object should.Alec Allston is resigned to the fact that his love will ever be a river that flows out and never flows in. All he wanted to do was create a special gift so that a small part of himself could be with his unattainable and noble beloved, always. But when the gift keeps showing back up at his shop in the hands of a windblown and rugged thief-taker, Alec will need to reconsider his conviction that love is destined to remain an ethereal ideal. This book is one of seven stories which can all be read and enjoyed in any order. * * * * * The Christmas Angel Series:In 1750, a master woodcarver poured all his unrequited love, passion, and longing into his masterpiece--a gorgeous Christmas angel for his beloved's tree. Since then, the angel has been passed down, sold, lost and found, but its magic remains. Read the romances inspired by (and perhaps nudged along by) the Christmas angel through the years. I have a bit of a soft spot for a good holiday novella. I didn't go in with very high expectations for this one though, I think the slightly magical/angel element was less appealing to me, but historical m/m books are still scarce enough that I couldn't so casually dismiss it. And it turned out to be so lovely and sweet. By the time their feelings were engaged I was all wrapped up in it. I'm just delighted. ( )

I enjoyed this story as I enjoy most good romances: for the characters, and the setting. Interesting time period, interesting MC professions, good dynamic of main and side characters, icky-realistic bad guy. But the angel element was my favorite, which is the only shocking part since I'm not usually a fan of religious-supernatural elements. Great final confrontation. If you're in the mood for a short novel, a historical m/m, or a historical holiday story, this one's good. ( )

The first in the Christmas Angel series, and I'm looking forward to reading most of them (five out of seven are available on Kindle Unlimited, so I'll probably only read those five, since book money is tight right now).

This book is a Georgian era romance, and I honestly don't think I've ever read one of those before. I'm not a huge fan of romances set in time periods where there are a lot of rigid social rules, so needless to say, I'm not a huge fan of the setting. But I do love historical fiction, especially when it features queer characters, so yay in spite of my less than enthusiastic response to the era of the book.

And I loved that virtually ALL of the side characters were somewhere on the queer spectrum! There are several gay men (obviously), two lesbians, and a trans woman. So YES for the diversity in this book!

I liked the character of Alec, and I enjoyed watching him thaw towards John and grow to care about him. I could have done without the bit at the end with Alec's ex coming back to threaten him. Also, I was kind of disappointed that the angel wasn't John's sister steering them together. I am assuming it isn't her since she had reddish hair, and John's sister was blonde, and John didn't see a resemblance in the angel to his dead sister...but still, I wanted the angel to be his sister SO BADLY.

I waffled a bit on the rating; for my personal enjoyment of the book, I'd probably go with three, maybe three and a half, stars, but that is because I really am not a fan of this time period at all. That's mostly about me, so I rounded up to four stars, because the book is well written and everything someone who would read an m/m romance set in this time period could want. Altogether, a nice historical Christmasy tale, for those who are so inclined. ( )
