While it's got redeemable qualities, it lacks depth and theme though I suspect the author felt otherwise. I grew weary of the redundant story line that's focused on a deeply dysfunctional family composed of flat, clueless characters. And while humorous in an ordinary way. I can't say it's funny. Not sure what the author had in mind, but for me, the word for this book is Dull! 3.5 stars, read for book club. Mostly meh. Retired film producer Marty and his grown (supposedly) daughters Janine and Amanda (who has twin daughters) and their dysfunctional relationships, including Marty's with his first ex-wife Bunny. He reconnects with Bunny when they are both in rehab in Malibu. Marty has a history of bad relationships and is currently in one with Gail who seems to only want his money, never minding Marty is practically out of his. There is a wide range of personalities in the characters in the book. I liked Henry and Janine, for the most part, after she arrived in LA. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Nearly six thousand miles away, in London, celebrated author Bunny Small, Marty's long-forgotten first wife, has her own problems: a "preposterous" case of writer's block, a monstrous drinking habit, and a son who has fled halfway around the world to escape her. When Marty's pill-popping gets out of hand and Bunny's boozing reaches crisis proportions, a perfect storm of dysfunction brings them all together at Directions, Malibu's most exclusive and absurd rehab center. But for all their failings, the members of this estrangedâ??and strangeâ??family love each other. Rich with warmth, humor, and deep insight, There's a Word for That is a comic ode to surviving the people closest to us, navigating the perils of success, and taking one last look in the rearview mirror before mapping out the Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

I almost put this book down close to where I usually do if I'm not enjoying it but picked it up again a few days later. Was it worth finishing? I think so. I ended up liking it more than I thought I would in the beginning. ( )
