In 1878, after Lizzie Doe's family loses everything in a fire, the twenty-year-old is forced to marry and go west to prospect a gold mine in Colorado. Miners, unaccustomed to such delicate beauty, nickname her Baby Doe. But Baby Doe proves herself tougher than they imagine when she finds herself abandoned, pregnant and running the mine alone. Her pluck gains the admiration of Silver King Horace Tabor, married and twice her age. In Horace Tabor, Baby Doe finds devotion and true passion. When scandal and economic ruin threatens Tabor's life, Lizzie makes a painful choice. Baby Doe Tabor was a real-life, deeply complex heroine, rising and falling and rising again with beguiling grit.… (meer)

Very interesting read into the life of Lizzie Doe aka Baby Doe Tabor. She was quite an abominable woman to many who didn't really know her, and didn't let anyone stop her or get in her way of what she wanted in life. Her family having lost pretty much everything in a fire, she marries and heads West with her husband to strike it rich in the mines. But strife, hard work and heart is all that Lizzie finds and quickly learns she must do things on her own to get anywhere in life. Having many admirers and a lying husband, she takes advantage of anything offered and eventually she has all that she could imagine and more but does money and riches really buy happiness when everyone else seems to hate and despise you and your one true love is always chasing the next riches deep into the dangerous earth? Baby Doe really lived an interesting life and I found her really fascinating in that she went very much against the culture and convention of how women were supposed to act and behave at the time. I am looking forward to reading more about her and her family in the next book, Silver Dollar. Thank you to Book & Wine Lovers for offering this read, and to the author for sending me the complementary autographed novel. This review is of my own opinion and accord. ( )

This was an excellent historical fiction (with a strong female lead). We all know women haven't always been treated the greatest throughout history, and this focuses on one woman just trying to make her way during the Colorado silver boom. Rosenberg does an excellent job bringing the historical setting to life, and I have no doubt that hours upon hours of research went into writing this. Baby Doe might not be what you expect, but you have to respect her determination and grit. Highly recommend! ( )

In 2017 I read the fantastic The Secret Life of Mrs. London by Rebecca Rosenberg. I recommend the book warmly btw. So, I was really looking forward to reading Gold Digger, The Remarkable Baby Doe Tabor. Now, I had never heard of Baby Doe Tabor before I read the book and that made this book extra interesting to read. I always like to learn more about real people.

Rebecca Rosenberg is a fabulous writer and I enjoyed getting a view into the often dangerous life of miners. Baby Doe or Elizabeth McCourt Tabor that was her real name married Harvey Doe. This was not a love match, she needed a husband with money to help her family. Together they traveled to Colorado to work in a gold mine that belonged to Doe's family. To say that they lived a happily married life is an exaggeration. Love would come later, with a totally different man. A man who would leave his wife for Baby Doe. Horace Tabor is a mining millionaire.

Now, I don't want to give away too much of the story. I purposely didn't check up Baby Doe on Wikipedia while reading the book because I don't want to read anything that would spoil the book. It's much more fun that way. Now, I found this book just didn't click with me the same way as The Secret Life of Mrs. London. And, I guess it all boils down to the fact that I found Baby Doe's life just not as interesting as Mrs. Londons. I found in the end that what I did like the most was the small cameos by Doc Holliday and Oscar Wilde. As for Horace Tabor, he was just not a man that intrigued me, a self-made millionaire who had a tendency to risk a bit too much. For some reason, he just didn't fascinate me.

Now, the book is absolutely read-worthy. My problem was more the subject than the writing. And, when you fail to connect with characters or/and the story, then it's hard to enjoy a book, despite the writing. However, if this book seems to be just your thing, then I say, go for it!

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review! ( )

Allow a full day for this PG15 Colorado historical romance set between April 1878 and 1899 about the life and times of Elizabeth McCourt Doe Tabor. I had a long-mislaid ARC from Netgalley and this voluntary review is my own opinion. ( )

Discover how the Tabors navigated the worlds of wealth, power, politics, and scandal in the wild days of western mining.. Interesting book on a time and place I knew very little about. ( )
