"Hedendaagse schouwburgbezoekers hebben in het winterseizoen 2015-2016 'De Stille Kracht' leren kennen als een toneelstuk van Ivo van Hove over de ondergang van de hoge bestuursambtenaar Otto van Oudijck, die in het vroegere Nederlandsch-Indië wordt gebroken door een geheimzinnige, occulte macht. Oudere televisiekijkers herinneren zich 'De Stille Kracht' als een TVserie uit 1974, waarin tot ergernis, verbazing of plezier van velen voor het eerst een naaktscène voorkwam. Het betrof de overspelige mevrouw Van Oudijck, die 'De Stille Kracht' letterlijk aan den lijve had ondervonden. Maar de eerste Nederlanders die kennis maakten met het verhaal over 'De Stille Kracht' en de familie Van Oudijck waren geen bezoekers of kijkers, maar lezers van een roman. En dat gebeurde meer dan een eeuw geleden. In het laatste jaar van de negentiende eeuw begon Louis Couperus in het vroegere Nederlandsch-Indië zijn meesterwerk 'De Stille Kracht', dat hij voltooide in het eerste jaar van de twintigste eeuw in Nederland. Tijd en plaats van ontstaan zijn typerend voor deze beroemde roman waarvan de thematiek berust op de tegenstelling tussen rijke en machtige Nederlandse kolonialen en een arme en onderdanige Indische bevolking. Een tegenstelling die zou worden opgeheven in een nieuw tijdperk dat in de roman wordt aangekondigd en zou leiden tot de verandering van een Nederlands overzees gebiedsdeel in de onafhankelijke republiek Indonesië. Deze heruitgave wordt ingeleid door Martien J.G. de Jong, schrijver en emeritus hoogleraar in de Letteren aan de Universiteit van Namen. Aan de hand van historische studies en gegevens uit onze eigen actualiteit bespreekt hij een belangrijk aspect van de 'Stille' Kracht waardoor de door Couperus indirect voorspelde historische ommekeer zou ontstaan. Dat aspect blijkt het zich al te luid over de hele actuele wereld manifesterend en verbreidend islamisme, zij het dan in andere vorm en wellicht met andere beweegredenen".
