Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. The sequel to Widdershins is much the same in style and time period. It's definitely a more fast paced, and the author has definitely developed her craft. I enjoyed seeing the continuation of the first story in a very stand-alone format. I thought it was widely accessible for all. Historical fiction novels aren't really my jam so it wasn't super enticing, but the story wasn't a bad one by any means. I received this audiobook through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program, along with the previous book in the series, Widdershins. I got a few hours into Widdershins and despite the beautiful writing style, the raw and poignant topics were a little too intense and realistic for me to get through. It is the type of book you can get pulled into for the rich descriptions and for me, that means the emotions it brought up were too intense.Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. Sunwise is the continuation of the story started in Widdershins about the Newcastle Witch Trials. Scottish Witch finder John Sharpe is heading north in his quest for witches, and he is becoming more delusional as time goes on. Jane Chandler, a healer whose mother was murdered by a witch finder, has no idea that Sharpe is hunting for her. This one was a little hard to listen to, with all the witch torture. It's obvious that Steadman did research into the customs, superstitions, and violence of the time.

I received this audiobook through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program, along with the kind offer from the publisher to download the previous work in the series, Widdershins. Well, I simply could not finish Widdershins and will not listen to Sunwise as a result. Widdershins was very uncomfortable for me to listen to, dealing with children being abused and purported witches mistreated. The writing seems very good, all too realistic for me in subjects I simply don't want to dwell on.geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

When Jane's lover, Tom, returns from the navy to find her unhappily married to his betrayer, Jane is caught in an impossible situation. Still reeling from the loss of her mother at the hands of the witch-finder John Sharpe, Jane has no choice but to continue her dangerous work as a healer while keeping her young daughter safe. But, as Tom searches for a way for him and Jane to be together, the witch-finder is still at large. Filled with vengeance, John will stop at nothing in his quest to rid England of the scourge of witchcraft. Inspired by true events, Sunwise tells the story of one woman's struggle for survival in a hostile and superstitious world. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

Jane is pregnant with Andrew’s child, she’s still making remedies for sick people, she has learnt that Tom is returning home, he was not lost at sea as she once thought. She is stricken because she is now married to Andrew but wants to be with Tom.
On top of that, she has just been warned that John is after her.
I really enjoyed this audiobook just as much as the first, I liked how it continued straight after the first book so I didn’t find that I missed out on anything.
Helen Steadman has written both these completely different characters so well, I have vivid images of both inside my head, what they looked like, what they wore and even the expressions they made at certain points.
I was rooting for Jane to get her to wish and to be happy throughout that I could not stop listening to the audiobook and listened to it in one session!
The end was quite sad but that said the aftermath was very satisfying!
As before, Christine Mackie gave a great performance as the narrator and I definitely want to pick up more audiobooks read by her.
Overall, this has been a fantastic series and I am honoured to have been chosen to be a part of the book tour. Thank you.
