Locals love these whistles, which, hanging from the birds' feathers, make wonderful symphonies by turning over the houses. Placed in boarding house at an American pastor, the young Yong Sheng will follow the teaching of his daughter Mary, teacher of the Christian school. It is she who gives birth to the vocation of the boy: Yong Sheng, while making whistles like his father, decides to become the first Chinese pastor of the city. Married forcibly to obey old superstitions, Yong Sheng will study theology in Nanjing and, after many adventures, the young pastor will return to Putian for a brief period of happiness. But everything changed in 1949 with the advent of the People's Republic, beginning for him as for so many other Chinese in an era of torment - which culminate during the Cultural Revolution. Dai Sijie, in this new novel, returns to the autobiographical vein of his first book, Balzac and the little Chinese cutter .
