On the world called Hyperion, beyond the law of the Hegemony of Man, there waits the creature called the Shrike. There are those who worship it. There are those who fear it. And there are those who have vowed to destroy it. In the Valley of Time Tombs, where huge brooding structures move backward through time, the Shrike waits for them all. On the eve of Armageddon, with the entire galaxy at war, seven pilgrims set forth on a final voyage to Hyperion seeking the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope--and a terrible secret. And one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands. A stunning tour-de-force filled with transcedent awe and wonder, Hyperion is a masterwork of science fiction that resonates with excitement and invention, the first volume in a remarkable new science fiction epic by the multiple-award-winning author of The Hollow Man.… (meer)

    Duin door Frank Herbert (corporate_clone)
corporate_clone: It is difficult not to compare Dune and Hyperion, even though both series have major differences in terms of tone, style and philosophy. Those are two long, epic, elaborate and very ambitious sci-fi masterpieces where religion plays a key role. I would highly recommend the fans of one to check out the other.… (meer)

Take this lone voice who appears to be greatly in the minority with some seriousness. This is not the first sci-fi or time difference books I've read. Sci-Fi is my genre.

I did not enjoy my time reading this and I didn't take away any good from reading it. Each story part held no interest to me which the diversity of stories should have grabbed my attention once. The father and his daughter was close to a compelling story but the abrupt end to all these stories to narrow back into the initial story doesn't leave this or any story with much to look forward to. And let me reveal a slight spoiler - you'll have to read the next book to get any real ending to the stories and it would be best if you didn't like it to just find the wiki some sort of conclusion but even still it's wasn't worth the investment. There are too much unnecessary sex scenes, vulgarity, and nihilism. The lack of caring that any character has makes everything seem even less the resigning to their fate (and from the wiki to the next book it seems well-founded). I'm no prude but one story is pretty much one long sex scene and another story is an attempt to set the record for vulgarity. There are elements of sci-fi in them, sure. However, the parts do not add up to be greater or less than the whole. It paints a world with not enough detail and definitely too much mystery to care. With no conclusion, if one didn't care about the stories, you didn't even get a "and then the universe blew up and everyone died".

Again, a lone voice in a lot of people who enjoyed it. But this loner was bored to death by the Shrike.

I enjoyed this quite a bit but am not sure why it's seen as one of the "best" sci-fi. Each story is interesting - some more than others. The Scholars Tale is wonderfully sad but The Poet and the Consul were a bit "MEH". The audiobook was excellently done though. Luckily I knew it does not conclude and I have the sequel on hold at library. ( )

I’ve read several of Dan Simmon’s novels with mixed results. One constant that I’ve found is that almost all of his work that I have encountered could profit by a 10% reduction in volume. His books are bloated, period. Which is no surprise, because he has an almost pathological aversion to editing. In the forward to his novel, Carrion Comfort, he took the opportunity to humiliate and lambast the editor of his first book, in an effort to make the point that his books don’t need editing. He’s wrong.

In any event, this is the best Simmons book I’ve read to date. It may be best described as Canterbury Tales in space. The novel is set in a far future, on the planet Hyperion. Seven “pilgrims” are making the trip to Hyperion to encounter the Shrike, an almost mythical creature who has become the subject of an intergalactic cult.

As the pilgrimage progresses, each participant tells a story pertaining to Hyperion, the Shrike or the circumstances of their individual journeys. As a backdrop, an intergalactic conflict is brewing between the two branches of humanity that accounted for the diaspora from Old Earth, four hundred years previous.

The world building in this case is very good and in addition, the hard science fiction is well handled. There are six “tales” interspersed in the story, four of which are first rate, and one of which is magnificent (the Scholar’s Tale). I knew going in, that there were four books in the series, so this particular book features no resolution, but carries forward to the sequel, Fall of Hyperion. ( )

Overrated. Had to force myself through parts of it (especially the retarded "Siri's rebellion" part), which is a sign of bad pacing.

Gotta read the sequel (I'll be borrowing it, not buying it) because the ending of this one was a cliff-hanger that's a totally whorish set-up for a sequel. Ethically, ending a novel with such a cliff-hanger, without any indication on the cover that the reader is embarking upon a series instead of a stand-alone work, is disgusting. ( )

The stories within where really interesting, but I was expecting an ending for the book.
Now I'll have to read the next one. Clever marketing scheme.

The Hegemony Consul sat on the balcony of his ebony spaceship and played Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C-Sharp Minor on an ancient but well-maintained Steinway while great, green, saurian things surged and bellowed in the swamps below. (Prologue)
The Consul awoke with a peculiar headache, dry throat, and sense of having forgotten a thousand dreams which only periods in cryogenic fugue could bring.

Several translations of the Hyperion series were published as multiple volumes There are no equivalent English volumes. Do not combine these with any works other than the equivalent partial volume in another language.

The ISBNs here are not always correctly matched up to the books. Use both the title and ISBN to figure out what the actual work is. Also note that the title sometimes contains the volume number in the entire Hyperion series (with or without multiple parts).
