Dana Story is the last of many generations of Essex men to labor in the town's renowned shipyards. Having grown up in his father's shipyard, Story tried to carry on the trade after World War II, but by then wooden shipbuilding was an anachronism, and his yard failed in 1948. In this candid reminiscence, Dana Story captures the spicy character of a coastal New England town. With obvious fondness he brings to life the shipyard gangs, men of long experience, proud and eccentric. This is an engaging account of a vanished segment of New England life. Live closeby and never visited the museum but like learning new things and this book has a lot of things to learn about. All the word useage is well explained using ship words and the making of the ships.
Starts out as a young boy and his daily life not only his but his parents who help run the shipyard also. Summer he went to camp and how he learns about the shipbuilding business from the ground up til he runs and owns it.
His father dies suddenly and his step brother takes over and his mother wants to move to a smaller house that easier and cheaper to run. Book goes over the different ages of the man as he not only got older but was educated more about the shipbuilding business.
