Someone is watching. Someone is waiting. Despite having attracted the attention of a dangerous stalker, Special Agent Jason West is doing his best to keep his mind on his job and off his own troubles. But his latest case implicates one of the original Monuments Men in the theft and perhaps destruction of part of the world's cultural heritage-a lost painting by Vermeer. Naval Reserve Lieutenant Commander Emerson Harley wasn't just a World War II hero, he was the grandfather Jason grew up idolizing. In fact, Grandpa Harley was a large part of what inspired Jason to join the FBI's Art Crime Team. Learning that his legendary grandfather might have turned a blind eye to American GIs "liberating" priceless art treasures at the end of the war is more than disturbing. It's devastating. Jason is determined to clear his grandfather's name, even if that means breaking a few rules and regulations himself-putting him on a collision course with romantic partner BAU Chief Sam Kennedy. Meanwhile, someone in the shadows is biding his time...… (meer)

Hoopla had this as the third book in the series. I could tell there was action between this book and "Monet Murders," but just assumed it was off-stage, or possibly a short story. But no, Hoopla only has books 1, 2, and 4 of the 5 book series.

Jason acts unethically in an investigation of art looted during WWII, as the grandfather Jason idolized is implicated. Then Jason is whiny when Sam is unforgiving. That they seem to end up together at the end is problematic. ( )

Relationship: good. Plot? Eh.

I would have enjoyed this one more had there not been so much extraneous description. I ended up skimming through chunks of that and repetition, and missed nothing thereby. The last several chapters are much better, but overall it felt very much as if there was not enough plot for the required word count.

However, I appreciated the seriousness of the emotional/ethical conflict. That was powerful.

Their assumption of who is stalking Jason continues to feel premature and unfounded. At the end of the first book, the guy's done nothing criminal. He's just weird. Did I miss something? I'll never re-read this series, so I hope not. ( )

Jason and Sam find themselves in the rare circumstance of both being in the same place at the same time as Sam wraps up a task force while Jason investigates the possible existence of paintings looted by an American GI during WWII. Both are looking forward to sharing more than a few times together. Jason’s case forms the entirety of the mystery plot, and he finds that a beloved member of his own family may have been more than "involved". There’s a lot of discussion of history, and art in particular, which I could have done with less of.... but I did really like the case and their task of making sense of it after so much time had passed. The hard sell of the plot though, is the building relationship between Jason and Sam. These two are really great characters. ( )

That last chapter had me on the edge of my seat PHEW!

Clearly Jason hiding his personal stake in the case was the root of most—if not all—conflict here, and I could understand why both Jason and Sam acted as they did after Sam put two and two together. Even though Jason’s emotional response to Sam’s reaction did strike me as overdone as in “what did you expect? You’re the one doing something illegal ( )

I blinked and I was already halfway. Either I was reading too fast or too much at once. XD
I was surprised I didn't find this story too dry, because this kind of investigative work can bore me to death. But I liked seeing Jason in his element. He really does love art; searching for it, talking about it and just looking at it. His passion really shows here that I hadn't really realized before.
And I wasn't too bothered that the romance took a backseat... in a way.
I hope the next book won't be the last, coz I'm enjoying the hell out of this series.
4.5 stars. ( )
