The heroine (?) falls for a dashing, but scarred man. After a few false starts, they conquer the world together. I'm not a romance reader, but this was an excellent read! I understand it is part of a series and I will look up book two. My only complaint is that Phyllidia (Philly) is just so naive! However, she is very happy in her naivete and it works out for her..... 392 pages I enjoyed this. The plot was interesting and I liked the characters. Philly and Arthur worked well together. I liked that their actual relationship was free of drama - more or less anyway. I didn't guess the twist although in hindsight there were clues. I liked the supporting characters (William, the dogs, Mrs Oglivy and the Earl). 3 stars. Full of anti-role-models. A completely cringe-worthy regency romance. The perfect little woman, a stunning beauty, well-behaved as any stepford wife, and ready to take on any injured animal or person because she is so utterly compassionate and understanding. What a paragon. The tempermental damaged hero has PTSD and physical disabilities but, all in all, is pretty much an ass despite all the excuses made for his behavior. Both are TSTL. He knowing, that her life is in danger, refuses to inform her so not to worry her pretty little head. Gag me. I know that failure to communicate and misunderstandings are key plotpoints for these types of novels but give me a break. Despite a previous attempt on her life, she trusts everyone and believes the best of everyone. So no surprise when she hares off without notice to anyone because, gosh, some damaged animal might need her. Like an extremely stupid St. Francis of Assisi with a death wish. Recommended for insecure women who dream of being told what to do and how to do it by an unstable alpha male. Or anyone still stuck in the 1950s. Not recommended. Phyllida Satterthwaite, twenty-three, has lead a quite life with her grandfather Sir Charles of Satterhwaite Court in Devonshire, but after her time of mourning his death is over in 1814 she is taken to London by the only relations she has left. Edgar Townsend has agreed to give her season as she stays with him and her cousins Elizabeth and Abigail. But unknown to her the cruel and sinister Duke of Moreland, a collector of items, wants her for himself. Who can she turn to in her need. A delightful well-written romance. The main characters are quite lovely, especially the way they are able to interact with each other considering the period, and the story kept my interest right to the end. Once again Ms Matthews has written an enjoyable story. A NetGalley Book geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

An Uncommon Beauty... Hidden away in rural Devonshire, Phyllida Satterthwaite has always been considered more odd than beautiful. But in London, her oddity has made her a sensation. Far worse, it's caught the eye of the sinister Duke of Moreland-a notorious art collector obsessed with acquiring one-of-a-kind treasures. To escape the duke's clutches, she's going to need a little help. An Unlikely Hero... Captain Arthur Heywood's days of heroism are long past. Grievously injured in the Peninsular War, he can no longer walk unaided, let alone shoot a pistol. What use can he possibly be to a damsel in distress? He has nothing left to offer except his good name. Can a marriage of convenience save Philly from the vengeful duke? Or will life with Arthur put her-and her heart-in more danger than ever?
