Merkwaardige lectuur-ervaring. Je waant je aanvankelijk in een doublure van Jane Austens Mansfield Parc, daarna doet de sfeerschepping aan de Bronte’s en de schrijfstijl aan Virginia Woolf denken, wellicht niet toevallig allemaal Britse, vrouwelijke auteurs. Het verhaal situeert zich in het midden van de jaren 1930, in een milieu van welgestelde Britse burgerij. Het tempo ligt traag, en er ligt een zwaar accent op de verschillende percepties van de hoofdrolspelers, ook niet toevallig zo zal achteraf blijken. Dan volgt een dramatische ontwikkeling die weer knap vanuit verschillende perspectieven wordt beschreven; einde verhaal denk je, maar niets is minder waar. We springen naar mei 1940 en krijgen een nogal hallucinante episode uit de tweede wereldoorlog voorgeschoteld: de chaotische terugtrekking van de Britse troepen op Duinkerken; wat mij betreft is dit één van de meest indringende beschrijvingen van de oorlogsverschrikkingen die ik ooit gelezen heb. Vervolgens verhuist de focus weer naar Londen, juli 1940 en komen de verhaallijnen uit de vorige delen samen in een ultieme confrontatie. McEwan geeft hier een staaltje van psychologisch doorzicht ten beste, met enkele scenes die nog lang in mijn geheugen zullen blijven hangen. Alleen de epiloog, meer dan 50 jaar later, is er voor mij een beetje teveel aan; dit deel biedt McEwan in de beste postmodernistische traditie de gelegenheid om het meta-verhaal van het schrijverschap uit te diepen; op zich interessant, maar ik heb er geen boodschap aan. Een paar jaar voor de oorlog vindt een incident plaats tussen twee zussen en een huisvriend, die verliefd is op de oudste zus. Vooral door de op hol geslagen fantasie van het jongste zusje gaat het helemaal fout. Pas jaren later is ze in staat toe te geven dat ze het fout heeft gehad. Het is dan te laat om ook nog maar iets goed te maken. Dat probeert ze door het boek "Boetekleed" te schrijven, toch nog te doen. Fantastisch boek, met ook veel ruimte voor wat een schrijver met zijn/haar woorden kan doen.
Nadat een jongeman 15 jaar in de gevangenis heeft doorgebracht vanwege een valse beschuldiging van verkrachting, probeert de jonge vrouw die hem heeft beschuldigd met zichzelf in het reine te komen en de aangerichte schade te herstellen ( )
McEwan is technically at the height of his powers, and can do more or less anything he likes with the novel form. He shows this fact off in the first section of Atonement, in which he does one of the hardest things a good writer can do: engrossingly, sustainedly, and convincingly impersonate a bad one.
McEwan is crafty. Even as he shows us the damages of story-telling, he demonstrates its beguilements on every page. Atonement is full of timeworn literary contrivances--an English country house, lovers from different classes, an intercepted letter--rendered with the delicately crafted understanding of E.M. Forster.
If it's plot, suspense and a Bergsonian sensitivity to the intricacies of individual consciousnesses you want, then McEwan is your man and ''Atonement'' your novel. It is his most complete and compassionate work to date.
