In the mid 1960s, Rand McNally assembled a team of the world's leading cartographers and geographers for an extraordinarily ambitious purpose to design and create the ultimate reference atlas--one that would surpass all others in cartographic quality, comprehensiveness, and ease of use. Through this unique collaboration "The New International Atlas" was born. Gilt-edged gold lettering imprinted on faux brown leather. Preface is in five languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Portugese. This Atlas represents a very international effort at mapmaking. Locally-used names are used or included, as well as English where international usage prevails. The continents are portrayed at 1:24,000,000 in natural colors, as they might appear from 4,000 miles in space.

In a second series of maps, regions are displayed at 1:12,000,000 (190 miles to the inch) with political features. The third series presents the inhabited areas at 1:6,000,000 (95 miles/inch), or 1:3,000,000 (47 miles/inch). Certain key regions selected for their demographic importance are presented in a fourth series at 1:1,000,000 (16 miles to the inch_, and in a final series, the world's major urban areas, omitting relief, are mapped at 1:300,000 (4.7 miles per inch). This Atlas presents dramatic advances made in relief.

The concluding section consists of Topical maps. These depict important economic activity, poliical alignments, and cultural distributions. Depiction of areas in 1914, 1937, and by Population; by Religion, Languages, and Agricultural and Mineral sites; by Energy Production and Consumption; by GNP, Trade, and Air Connections; Time zones; Climate; Tectonics, Vegetation, and Soils; Ocean bottom and currents.

Includes Index, glossary of geographical terms, and tables of world information--area, demographics, political status. Major cities are profiled. Half of the book is the listing of communities by name, population and location.
