Murphy combines a discussion of mystical prayer and literary criticism of Dickinson’s poetry. Beginning with an outline of mysticism and the poet’s background, Murphy interprets a selection of poems through the lens of mystical prayer. Well known is Dickinson’s trope of searching for God. This psychological conflict was particularly influenced by the Puritan remnants of Dickinson’s upbringing in which only the saved were considered as being in the presence of God. Having never considered herself among the saved, the poet was at odds with religion. In light of this poetic struggle, Murphy proposes that Dickinson’s poetry contains a second trope, a pattern of mystical prayer reminiscent of the works of Teresa of Avila. Where these tropes meet is in the mystical principle of knowing God on a personal level and on one’s own terms, even if that knowing is in opposition to religious convention. In exploring this poetic example, Murphy has created a literary criticism of theological depth that enlightens another facet of the singular Emily Dickinson. Recommended for parish and academic libraries.
