""The only art I'll ever study is stuff that I can steal from." --David Bowie // Three years before David Bowie died, he shared a list of 100 books that changed his life. His choices span fiction and nonfiction, literary and irreverent, and include timeless classics alongside eyebrow-raising obscurities. // In 100 short essays, music journalist John O'Connell studies each book on Bowie's list and contextualizes it in the artist's life and work. How did the power imbued in a single suit of armor in The Iliad impact a man who loved costumes, shifting identity, and the siren song of the alter-ego? How did The Gnostic Gospels inform Bowie's own hazy personal cosmology? How did the poems of T.S. Eliot and Frank O'Hara, the fiction of Vladimir Nabokov and Anthony Burgess, the comics of The Beano and The Viz, and the groundbreaking politics of James Baldwin influence Bowie's lyrics, his sound, his artistic outlook? How did the 100 books on this list influence one of the most influential artists of a generation? // Heartfelt, analytical, and totally original, Bowie's Bookshelf is one part epic reading guide and one part biography of a music legend"--… (meer)

Like, I suspect, most of the people who frequent this site, I'm always interested in what people are reading, particularly when they're a variegated generalist like Bowie was. Very much the sort of book you dip in from time to time, and which tries to link books up to specific songs by the man. ( )

I like books, I like Bowie. The only good thing about this book is the cover image of Bowie looking hot while reading a book. Seems like the author isn't even literate. ( )

There is a genre of books called Books on Books which interests me. This would be included in that category. It would be ordinarily classified as Biography and or Media Studies.
O'Connell's book about Bowie and Bowie's life is interesting on the possible minutiae related to the literary works he possibly read or was influenced by. The list was to accompany the exhibition but was complied by exhibition curators Geoffrey Marsh and Victoria Broackes, not Bowie. It doesn't matter that he did not originate the list, because it still shows Bowie's input and wide range of interests. The list is of course not exhaustive.
I had not read many of these books so O'Connell does provide some utility with his comments. Some comments are allusive to other works not on the list and some are nice outlines, all are short.
The injection of O'Connell's own biases makes this book far less readable than it could have been. He's the author and he can do what he wants. It might have been a remarkable book without assuming Bowie would agree with his opinions. O'Connell, in my opinion, seems to downplay the role of Buddhism in Bowie's philosophy of Life and lyrical content. For some reason O'Connell seems to think that Camille Paglia had originated Bowie's theory of cultural collapse. The description he gives (Book #82) is straight from Nietzsche and The Birth of Tragedy.

Bowie's Bookshelf is a well written book that allows for discussion on a variety of topics which Bowie wished to bring into his orbit. Bibliography, Drawings.

Really great for a list of interesting books to read, but too much speculation as to how these books might have actually influenced Bowie. ( )
