Onderdeel van de reeks(en)The Book of...Swords and Magic {edited by Gardner Dozois} (Magic, part I) Is opgenomen in
An anthology celebrating the witches and sorcerers of epic fantasy-featuring stories by George R. R. Martin, Scott Lynch, Megan Lindholm, and many more! Hot on the heels of Gardner Dozois's (Rogues, Old Venus) acclaimed anthology The Book of Swords comes this companion volume devoted to magic. How could it be otherwise? For every Frodo, there is a Gandalf...and a Saruman. For every Dorothy, a Glinda...and a Wicked Witch of the West. What would Harry Potter be without Albus Dumbledore...and Severus Snape? Figures of wisdom and power, possessing arcane, often forbidden knowledge, wizards and sorcerers are shaped-or misshaped-by the potent magic they seek to wield. Yet though their abilities may be godlike, these men and women remain human...some might say all too human. Such is their curse. And their glory. In these pages, seventeen of today's top fantasy writers-including award-winners K. J. Parker (The Two of Swords), Megan Lindholm (The Windsingers), John Crowley (The Deep), Tim Powers (Last Call), Liz Williams (Snake Agent), Elizabeth Bear (Eternal Sky Trilogy), George R.R. Martin (A Song of Ice and Fire), Kate Elliott (The Court of Fives Trilogy), Scott Lynch (The Republic of Thieves), and more-cast wondrous spells that thrillingly evoke the mysterious, awesome, and at times downright terrifying worlds where magic reigns supreme: worlds as far away as forever...and as near as next door. K J Parker's story The Return of the Pig is a story of magicians jostling for a top position and competition that turns deadly.
Megan Lindholm's Community Service is a story of doing a favour for a friend and discovering what you can lose. Probably the story I found best.
John Crowley's Flint and mirror was about Ireland and Elizabethan times and disconnecting someone from their past, but it seemed to lack a certain sense of time and place.
Matthew Hughes' The Friends of Masquelayne the Incomparable blended with the Parker story in my brain, it's again a story of magic users jostling for top position but this one has someone who refuses to play the game but is not to be underestimated.
Biography of a bouncing boy terror: Chapter II: Jumping Jack in Love by Ysabeau S Wilce is one of those stories that will probably win awards but that I didn't really enjoy. I'm just not the market for this story.
Song of Fire by Rachel Pollack was quite interesting a man who can solve supernatural mysteries is hired to investigate why Djinn are losing their power.
Loft the Sorcerer by Eleanor Arnason is an interesting tale based on an Icelandic Legend but adjusted a bit. It's interesting and twisty and while I'm not familiar with the legend I found it read like a legendary story.
Tim Power's The Governor is an interesting story of family heritance and consequences of actions. I did like it. The revenge was subtle but well done.
It's not a bad read but there was nothing here that stood out. Diverting without making me want to read more by any of the authors. ( )
