Best-selling author Mitch Albom returns to nonfiction for the first time in more than a decade in this poignant memoir that celebrates Chika, a young Haitian orphan whose short life would forever change his heart. Performed by Mitch Albom with Chika's voice featured throughout.

Chika Jeune was born three days before the devastating earthquake that decimated Haiti in 2010. She spent her infancy in a landscape of extreme poverty, and when her mother died giving birth to a baby brother, Chika was brought to The Have Faith Haiti Orphanage that Albom operates in Port Au Prince.

With no children of their own, the 40-plus children who live, play, and go to school at the orphanage have become family to Mitch and his wife, Janine. Chika's arrival makes a quick impression. Brave and self-assured, even as a three-year-old, she delights the other kids and teachers. But at age five, Chika is suddenly diagnosed with something a doctor there says "no one in Haiti can help you with."

Mitch and Janine bring Chika to Detroit, hopeful that American medical care can soon return her to her homeland. Instead, Chika becomes a permanent part of their household, and their lives, as they embark on a two-year, around-the-world journey to find a cure. As Chika's boundless optimism and humor teach Mitch the joys of caring for a child, he learns that a relationship built on love, no matter what blows it takes, can never be lost.

Told in hindsight, and through illuminating conversations with Chika herself, this is Albom at his most poignant and vulnerable. Finding Chika is a celebration of a girl, her adoptive guardians, and the incredible bond they formed - a devastatingly beautiful portrait of what it means to be a family, regardless of how it is made.

Wow! Such a heart wrenching story! Mitch Albom and his wife, Janine, operate an orphanage in Haiti. Chika, comes to live at the orphanage after her mother dies unexpectedly and her aunt can no longer care for her. Poor little Chika develops serious health problems and is unable to receive the necessary medical care in Haiti. Mitch and Janine openly welcome Chika into their home and hearts. How the story ends is of no surprise, as Mitch tells the reader in the very beginning. The joy and suffering endured during such a short amount of time are immeasurable. I admire their strength and love for one another. An excellent reminder of what is most important in life. ( )

Albom is a master of describing the feelings of engaging on a deep level with others. He's done it brilliantly before.

In Finding Chika he shows how bringing a child home turned a couple, he and his wife Janine, into a family. Caring for and worrying about Chika was stressful and challenging. But her vibrancy, laughter and courage filled them with determination and love. Her enthusiastic playfulness, singing and opining attracted many followers and supporters.

Sweet, heart-breaking and yet hopeful story.

DNF @ 28%. Albom's emotions are the driving force behind this very short book but I can't get invested.

Having read Ablom's iconic, "Tuesdays with Morrie" several times, I looked forward to the insights from this experience. His evocative style of storytelling yields tears, joy
and 'food for thought', which for those that are familiar wth him expect. Chika Jeune was a blessing in so many ways, but witnessing her health deteriorate made chapters difficult to read. And while "Morrie's" story was heart wrenching, this one was FAR more challenging. At its core, we're reminded of a child's view of the world; wonder, joy, curiosity, unconditional love and playfulness; emotions we often forget as adults. Frankly speaking, of all books I've read, this was by far the most difficult. In all honesty, 'Tuesdays with Morrie' was far more to my liking. ( )

Heartwarming and heartbreaking, Mitch Albom uses his unique storytelling style to share how he brought five-year-old Chika to Michigan from Haiti to seek lifesaving medical care, and how he found a family. ( )
