In the pocket classics series, this is the story of Fay, the ward of John Fausset, who is taken into the family. A mystery surrounds her, if she is an heiress, why does she arrive with torn embroidery on her under-linen. What is the nature of her relationship with John Fausset, and why does his wife so resent her? Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |

While I devoured M. Braddon's better-known 'Lady Audley's Secret', I found this work of Victorian sensationalism a tad cloying.
The central character is Mildred Fausset; in her childhood, her father's ward comes to live with them temporarily, causing much marital discord when his wife becomes convinced she is his child from an earlier liaison.
The years roll by, the ward is sent off to a finishing school, while Mildred makes a happy marriage. And then a chance encounter reveals a dark secret in her husband's past, threatening their life together...
The reader will deduce the true facts long before the final denouement. I quite enjoyed it, but it's your typical OTT Victorian fare: a virtuous wife, a lunatic asylum, an Italian adventurer, bereavements and secrets ... all set in beautiful country houses or villas in the S of France and Italy. ( )
