The Longman Companion to Victorian Fiction is not just another tired old compilation. John Sutherland's reference book is an essential resource for basic data, most especially on the very many minor to middling Victorian-era fiction-writers. ( )
If we are honest we should admit that John Sutherland knows far more than we do and acknowledge, sadly, that future corrections will be made (if at all) by a team of editors. Never again is a single mind likely to encompass the colossal range that this Companion represents.
