Starom: Socialism and anti-Imperialism have been rife in South America for decades. The rise of Salvador Allende in Chile (and his eventual, tragic demise) were testament to such feelings - he stood up against American interests in his country and paid the ultimate price for his bravery. However, his legacy lives on.
In 'Pirates of the Caribbean: Axis of Hope', Tariq Ali gives his analysis of four leaders in modern-day South America: Evo Morales of Bolivia, Rafael Correa of Ecuador, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and, of course, Fidel Castro of Cuba. His writings of each country are full of candid interviews, remarkable diaries (particular the ones surrounding the attempted military coup on Venezuela) and wonderful anecdotes, allowing one to truly comprehend South America from Ali's perspective. Each of those men share the anti-Imperialist stance of Allende and each of them aims to move their country to socialism.
Chavez' story is particularly telling - especially when one considers that his fate was almost identical to that of Allende. Both men were brought into power by a democratic vote, but neither man had the full support of all of his countrymen. Both vehemetly opposed CIA/US interests in his homeland, nationalising industries and blocking US domination - both were subject to opposition from these organisations. Both were removed from power in a US/CIA-backed military coup. Both faced execution at the hands of the coup-leaders. Yet Chavez support was much greater than that of Allende and, ultimately, the coup collapsed and he returned to power, stronger than ever.
In short, this is a brilliantly informative and, often, fascinating collection of Ali's opinions on South America - a must read for those with a true interest in Bolivarian/Socialist/anti-Imperialist politics.… (meer)
