A Pebble for Lewis is the story of Lewis a penguin shifter, and polar bear shifter, Todd. This is told in first person from both character’s povs.

This story was so darn cute! The author created a detailed and unique shifter world. Polar bears and penguins have their own social and relationship rules, lots of rules, that are totally different which encourages them to avoid each other. They even reside in different parts of the town. The plot is written so that there are jumps in years, usually around certain events, that show the progression of their relationship and how it develops from friendship to something more. I’m not a fan of time jumps, but I think it worked in this book because it was used to show that Lewis and Todd were friends for quite a long time before becoming romantic. Their love for each other wasn’t just something that materialized like it is often written in romance books. This isn’t exactly a holiday story because there’s no holiday celebrated other than pebble gifting when Lewis comes of age. But it does take place in Alaska so it’s cold and wintery.

I’d say the blurb is slightly misleading in that it gives the impression that Todd, just because he’s a polar bear is more than likely not going to stick around, so Lewis shouldn’t fall for him. Maybe that was intended to be the conflict, instead I’d say the conflict came between the parents and the species not accepting Lewis and Todd together. They represented a mixed-race couple. Todd and Lewis do have to learn the rules about each other’s species which I found an interesting part of the plot. I’m also glad that there wasn’t a lot of misunderstandings between the two. They worked on their relationship because they really wanted to be together.

Lewis and Todd meet when Lewis is underage, so nothing happens between them. They meet again when Todd visits Lewis’ dad’s grocery store and Lewis is working there. I won’t go into detail about how their relationship progresses, but the author did a good job with their thought and feelings about what was happening between them. Lewis isn’t like other penguins. He doesn’t go by the rules of the strict penguin society. Todd isn’t like other polar bears either. He hasn’t formed any serial relationships which is typical of polar bears. Todd’s heart remains true to Lewis.

I do want to mention my favorite scene. It’s from Lewis’ pov as he’s setting up his nest, and his thinking and rationalizing about why everything has to be ‘just so’. The author did a great job with that scene and I found it very funny. I love humor in books and that scene was funny but heartwarming because of Todd’s frustration because he didn’t understand it at all, but he remained patient at the same time.

A Pebble for Lewis was an adorable, fluffy story and I would recommend it. I plan on reading the next story about Ansel, a friend of Lewis and Todd’s, who’s also a polar bear shifter. Ansel has his eye on Lewis’ dad and that story should be fun as well. I give this story a solid, 4 Stars.

I thought that this was a ridiculously sweet book. Todd worked so hard to meet the penguins' traditions, and went so far above and beyond. They are perfect tigether. ( )
