"At 85 years old, Alejandro "Sandy" Stern, a brilliant defense lawyer with his health failing but spirit intact, is on the brink of retirement. But when his old friend Dr. Kiril Pafko, a former Nobel Prize winner in Medicine, is faced with charges of insider trading, fraud, and murder, his entire life's work is put in jeopardy, and Stern decides to take on one last trial. In a case that will provide the defining coda to both men's accomplished lives, Stern probes beneath the surface of his friend's dazzling veneer as a distinguished cancer researcher. As the trial progresses, Stern will question everything he thought he knew about his friend. Despite Pafko's many failings, is he innocent of the terrible charges laid against him? How far will Stern go to save his friend, and-no matter the trial's outcome-will he ever know the truth? Stern's duty to defend his client and his belief in the power of the judicial system both face a final, terrible test in the courtroom, where the evidence and reality are sometimes worlds apart"--… (meer)

I like legal dramas, but this book was thoroughly boring. Even though I have a legal background, the legalese, at times, was not understandable to me. The writing was dry, and the story went on way, way, way too long. I didn't find the plot to be all that interesting, and it took me about 5 days to get through the last 50 pages. For me, this was the weakest of any Scott Turow book. ( )

I'm a Scott Turow fan and, for me, reading this book was like encountering old friends after a long absence. I "remember" when Sandy Stern's first wife died, and when he defended a U.S. ADA for murder.

Mr. Turow's writing of the law is impeccable; his knowledge shows through. He also develops wonderfully complex characters and can draw a strong portrayal of personal relationships. Pinky was an interesting character and represents the next generation in the search for truth and justice.

In addition to a great legal drama, this book was a picture of aging and facing the end of a career.

I thought the ending was the weakest part of the story. I understand Sandy's desire to sort out the truth, but everyone's willingness to talk to him seemed forced. ( )

I used to love his books but this went on and on and on. Really not necessary. ( )

Last Trial is a masterpiece. Turow expounds on justice, inequity, and the legal fictions underpinning our system with the genius of a gifted law professor. Instead of communicating his sincere respect for the law and the majesty of his chosen profession in a boring lecture, he uses the conventions of the mystery/thriller genre. The characters are so rich in their detail. Where other authors would be chided for digressing, Turow tells us this story in order to tell us that story before circling back into the overarching narrative without ever losing the propulsion of the novel. The detailed character analysis ultimately results in natural but surprising plot twist. ( )
