Op dit moment geen Discussie gesprekken over dit boek. a divine book, stated "First Edition" HC 2004 Wm Morrow, an excellent book based on Sarah's later years and her struggle against prejudice in America, truly an eye-opener, $1 from the Strand in NY, I love that store. ( ) #40, 2004 This is the first book I received as an advance copy from the HarperCollins "First Look" program; a novel about a week-long period in the life of actor Sarah Bernhardt. I enjoyed this book, and found myself turning pages even when I should have gotten up to do other things. I enjoyed the author's use of words - rich descriptions which caused the book to affect me at a visceral level at times. I did find myself feeling a bit deflated at the end, but I think this is to be expected because of the subject - it's a look at Bernhardt's life as she was contemplating the end of her youth and perhaps her career. Having grown up in Venice, CA, the setting was particularly of interest to me, as were the historical things added to the novelization. It makes me want to learn more about Bernhardt in her younger years. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Bernhardt, or who enjoys this sort of "historical" fiction. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
Set over the course of one week in 1906, Divine Sarah reimagines the life of the legendary Sarah Bernhardt. Facing protests from the newly formed League of Decency, the controversial actress is forced to move her latest production from Los Angeles to the new development of Venice Beach. Though this battle is only the most recent skirmish in a tumultuous life, the sixty-two-year-old Sarah is exhausted and beginning to lose the will to fight. Plagued by maladies of the flesh and the spirit, she begins to search her soul, revealing the truths of her life, including the self-doubt and insecurity hidden beneath an extravagant and confrontational lifestyle. Yet Sarah is not alone in her battle. Vince Baker, an ambitious news reporter, faces his own demons even as he tries to uncover the truth about the greatest actress of the Victorian Age. This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more. Geen bibliotheekbeschrijvingen gevonden. |
