Meet John Gullivan, age thirteen, obsessed with the moles that dot most of his body. Meet his brother Gully, who can't stop laughing at them. Now meet the brothers ten years later, in the middle of the most ferocious blizzard anyone can remember. Set in an Irish working-class suburb of Boston in the 1960s and 1970s, Puff centers on a quest as the soon-to-be-orphaned brothers, posing as rescue personnel, attempt to steer their dilapidated van through insurmountable snow, all to score a bag of pot. Trapped in their own ruse and forced to act the part of the saviors they are pretending to be, the brothers run into an endless stream of foes and obstacles: the cops, their childhood priest, a knife-wielding maniac, and the ill all stand in the way of their elusive high. A raucous caper, Puff is as hilarious as it is heartfelt and will resonate with old and young alike.… (meer)

Puff takes place on the night of a severe blizzard in Boston during the 1970s. John and Gully Sullivan masquerade as Red Cross rescue personnel in order to maneuver around the city, trying to score a bag of weed before the night is through. Their misadventures, written by stand-up comic Bob Flaherty, are a riotous good time. ( )

One of the funniest books I've read in some time. Set in the Boston suburbs of the 1960's & 70's the main premise of the book is that the Gullivan brothers want to drive to Braintree to score some weed. During the Blizzard of 1978. Disguised as Red Cross Workers. They swiftly are sidetracked in their quest for a buzz as they have to assist people trapped in the storm. Told in first person by the elder brother John, the book relies on flashbacks to flesh out the story of the Gullivan family one that I find close to home. The narrative quickly veers away from it's silly but appealing premise to delve into more serious issues as the death of the Gullivan's mother and John re-igniting a romance with neighbor Dally (a raven-haired tomato). It reads as if Dude, Where's My Car were written by John Irving if he'd been raised Irish-American and Catholic.

"Is it possible that's all maturity is? Speaking better? Is it possible that everybody in the world -- the monsignor and president included -- is just a dumb, stupid kid acting like a grown-up because they can sound and look like one? It almost seems easy." - p. 212 ( )

The Gullivan brothers have nothing more in mind when they set out across town in a decrepit delivery van during a snowstorm than to score some "Dominican Sin," but they wind up on an adventure to rival Bill and Ted's when they're called upon to rescue not just a fair maiden in distress, but others in trouble as well.
