The school's motto is Securitas Genera Victoria meaning Security Breeds Success with security surveillance cameras posted in the halls and classrooms. Someone is posting embarrassing videos of students taken from those cameras. Anticipation builds as the reader tries to figure out who the hacker could be. Is it Josh the principal's son? Is it Ana, the girl who always gets perfect grades? Dominica and her friends use art to draw attention to the problems at school. Graffiti squirrels with "The Panopticon" start appearing on the walls around school. Soon others join in and a secret society is formed to pull off a big reveal at the parent open house. This book is about friendship, expression, growing up, cyber bullying, and art. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. This book is a great choice for middle school readers who are looking for books that deal with real-world problems. You would think that this would be more of a book for 3rd/4th graders by the writing style, but it deals with a more mature set of problems such as cyberbullying, privacy, drugs, and sexuality. It raises thought-provoking questions about ways to protest social injustice. I would recommend it for a middle school library or reading group. This middle grade grade book that I had my 6th grade homeschool group reading was a huge flop, simply due to the fact that the issues that Banksy has to deal with are not issues that any of our coop group of kids experience. Deze bespreking is geschreven voor LibraryThing Vroege Recensenten. This was an effective story for the Grade 6 to 8 crowd, an age-group that would relate quite well to the issues in a school-setting. The writing is engaging and develops some amusing vignettes of grandparents, single moms and childhood best friends. The protagonist is a girl in Grade 8 attending a private school where cyberbullying is going on. The author did a good job of articulating the angst of this age group, although the piece where we find out who was the "baddie" was a weak point. The motivation wasn't credible, but kids reading the story will love how the group of pals in grade 8 worked collaboratively to bring forward an issue around the school webcams. The author notes at the end of the book were excellent, with some advice that students shouldn't try to take on bullying by themselves. There is also an interesting link to who Banksy is and why he/she is a social activist. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"A Banksy-style protest against cameras in classrooms brings a group of middle-grade students together. For fans of Rebecca Stead, Susin Nielsen and Gordon Korman. Dominica's private school is covered in cameras, and someone is hacking into them and posting embarrassing moments for the whole school to see. Like Ana picking her nose. When Dominica quickly changes her shirt from inside out in what she thinks is the privacy of a quiet corner in the library, she's shocked -- and embarrassed -- to discover a video has captured this and is currently circulating amongst her schoolmates. So mortifying, especially since over the past three years, they've had a half-dozen school talks about social media safety. Who has access to the school security cameras and why are they doing this? Dominica and her best friends, Holden and Saanvi, are determined to find out, and in the process start an art-based student campaign against cameras in the classroom."
