Het is bang afwachten wie de president van Amerika gaat worden. ‘s Avonds kijk ik naar de documentaire over Hillary Clinton en overdag lees ik Rodham. Ik zit in een verslavende flow. En daar heeft Sittenfeld veel mee te maken. Sinds Prep ben ik fan, en nu nog meer. Ook van Hillary.
Meer van Hillary Rodham dan van Hillary Clinton, geef ik toe. Want ja; Rodham is een fictieve biografie over Hillary, één waarin ze niet trouwt met Bill Clinton maar wel aan haar eigen weg richting de top van de Amerikaanse politiek timmert.
Telkens ik het boek even weglegde (een mens moet eten) had ik het moeilijk om het weer op te pakken, en niet enkel omdat het zo zwaar is. Ik had elke keer opnieuw de angst dat het me zou gaan vervelen, al dat politiek gekonkelfoezel, al die spelletjes en eindeloze campagnes. De waarheid is dat geen enkele pagina me verveelt heeft, ik heb het boek gretig verslonden. Omdat ik tegelijkertijd de docu kijk zie ik de overeenkomsten én de verschillen. Want in het echt trouwde Hillary natuurlijk wél met Bill, werd Trump wél president en ziet de wereld er momenteel niet echt rooskleurig uit. Hoe anders het had kunnen zijn lees je dus in dit fantastische boek van Sittenfeld.
Alles aan dit boek is in feite waanzinnig: dat het mag, een fictief verhaal schrijven over een bestaand (nog levend) persoon (die trouwens ook schittert op de cover), dat het boeiend blijft tot de laatste pagina ondanks het feit dat politiek niet sexy is én dat dit ook ons huidige wereldbeeld had kunnen zijn. Dit boek lezen tijdens de afwikkelingen van de presidentsverkiezingen, waarin je kon kiezen tussen een oude, witte man die gek is en een oude, witte man die dat niet is is heel vaak denken: oh was het maar anders gelopen… En hoe lang moet dat nog duren: een vrouw aan de top!? Sittenfeld vermengt overtuigend het politieke bedrijf met de persoonlijke beslommeringen van Hillary, haar dilemma’s, haar worsteling met relaties en haar enigszins koele en truttige uitstraling. Zonder sentimenteel te zijn, krijgt de roman hier en daar zelfs een emotionele lading.
