Great art, as always, from Williams. The story itself reminds me why I don't overly care for Ellis, and I often find myself skipping the sections where someone blathers on for several pages about something Ellis finds interesting but has no real plot relevance. But the art is still gorgeous. ( )

I think anyone reading this could guess who wrote it. It's such a "dirty" environment and the characters language is so wonderfully filthy that it could only be Warren Ellis.

Desolation Jones totally reminds me of an artist friend of mine, except he's not a government experiment he just never eats, never sleeps and smokes and drinks a lot of coffee. This guy (Jones) is tough and mean but his heart's in the right place (though I'm not sure he still has one).

If you enjoyed Ellis' novel then you'd probably like this. It's the same kind of story really - just in graphic novel format. ( )

One of my favorite recent Ellis comics... a sleazy, paranoid X-files noir. More please. ( )

Though I'm a great fan of Ellis' work, I had some difficulty getting into Desolation Jones. I read it in singles, not collected into a trade paperback, so maybe that contributed; I will reread it to find out.

There's a lot that's good here: Ellis is at his filthy best in the plotting and humour. There's a scene that's a rewrite of one from The Big Sleep that offers Ellis the chance to bring out one of his Horrible Old Bastards - a character that, according to Ellis (I recall this from a post to warrenellis.com), builds up inside his brain and must sometimes be exorcised onto paper. Ellis' work is always smart, and Desolation Jones is funny and sometimes poignant as well. A scene with a porn star talking about her work in a cafe is both, and reminiscent of Transmetropolitan. Jones' employer also has some memorable scenes.

Perhaps my problem is, after all, with Jones. He's a scrawny Gothic crucifix of a man, entirely burnt out; he may, in fact, be dead, and I'm not sure what keeps him standing up. The nature of the dreadful "desolation test", often hinted at in this first arc, will eventually be revealed, I suppose, but I hope Ellis reveals a more interesting humanity in his protagonist along the way.

The art over this first arc is pretty-ugly, acid greens and oranges. Some panels, like the "lost angels of Los Angeles" are breathtaking. ( )
