I feel like this book is important for understanding the history of fascist lies and how integral they are to the philosophy. That being said, the book is really dense and a bit boring. The chapters feel like a bunch of disparate ideas stitched together rather than a cohesive thesis. ( )

tbh, my brain didn't absorb most of this, but it wasn't boring, and I feel just slightly but not insignificantly more informed about what fascism means exactly and why it's associated with dictatorships and the tactics that fascist dictators use to gain and maintain power. The epilogue/last chapter addresses how we might apply what we know about the historical dictators described throughout the book to our current situation (i.e., Trumpism) and delineates the dangers therein. International in scope and spanning the twentieth century’s infamous fascist leaders and their followers—Argentina’s Lugones, Spain’s Franco, Italy’s Mussolini, Germany’s Hitler, among others—along with the populist and fascist-leaning Argentine Peron and the 21st century’s own populist super-liar, Trump.

Este livro começa por prometer muito, mas depois não cumpre a promessa. Entre alguns capítulos interessantes surgem outros deveras desinteressantes.
“Hoje assistimos a uma vaga de novos líderes populistas» (18). O autor constata mas não justifica. A verdade é que a democracia liberal fornece munições aos populismos ao transformar em verdade as mentiras da propaganda destes. A imigração quase irrestrita e o asilo a povos não imbuídos dos valores e cultura ocidental são dois exemplos.
“A verdade está sempres subordinada ao poder” (18). Contudo, o grau dessa subordinação pode ser utilizado para medir o nível de totalitarismo numa sociedade.
A questão da definição de verdade é fundamental em propaganda, sobretudo na fascista. Os fascistas arvoram-se em detentores da verdade ao proclamarem que todos os outros defendem falsidades e mentiras.
O autor recorre muito a Hannah Arendt, com o mérito de até a tornar compreensível. Porém, não se compreende que o autor tenha recorrido aos pseudo-fascismos de Argentina, México e Brasil para justificar as suas teorias. Será que o fascismo europeu contemporâneo não se enquadra em tais teorias? Se sim, a escolha dos casos foi infeliz; se não, quem quer saber?
O fascismo constrói-se em aliança com a religião, contra a religião ou em substituição desta? O autor indicia estas três situações, mas que parece que ele próprio está confuso relativamente à conclusão a extrair. ( )
