I've always been interested in 60s and 70s hippie counterculture. In the book, Paulo and Karla take a trip to Kathmandu on the Magic Bus. We learn about the people on the bus, their experiences they have along the ride, and his relationship with Karla. I enjoyed the spiritual notes and cultural introductions, but I would have appreciated more depth. I made notes to authors, poets, religions, cultures that I want to know more about. I was hoping for a more immersive experience. I envision myself re-reading this for nuggets of wisdom and nourishment. En dehors d’un témoignage intéressant sur le Magic bus… bof, bof… on attend la suite sans impatience The problem with Coelho is that he breaks the golden rule of writing - show, don't tell. All he does is tell, tell, tell, never truly showing me how he or his characters feel. Hippie greatly suffers from this problem. There are some interesting anecdotes spread throughout the narrative, but they're buried under piles and piles of "telling" me about his perspective, his experiences, the world, and his characters' emotions. It's a quick read though, so that's good. The part where he's arrested and tortured in South America is clearly the best part. His travel through Europe falls flat, and the Turkish segment just feels forced. I was expecting an exciting travelog from a hippie's perspective. All I got was a confused man and his slightly boring travels through Europe. I love philosophy. I believe my first attempt at college which was terribly disappointing for my parents and a disaster for me(!) I received my only A in an introduction to Philosophy class taught by a professor from India. And this small tome served up ample portions of thought provoking questions regarding self, religion, and time. I loved it. Want to read again. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe
A Brazilian man and a Dutch woman embark on an extraordinary journey of self-discovery as they travel by bus from Amsterdam to Kathmandu against a backdrop of the protests and sexual-liberation experiments of the 1960s.
Drawing on the rich experience of his own life, best-selling author Paulo Coelho takes us back in time to relive the dreams of a generation that longed for peace and dared to challenge the established social order. In Hippie, he tells the story of Paulo, a young, skinny Brazilian man with a goatee and long, flowing hair, who wants to become a writer and sets off on a journey in search of a deeper meaning for his life: first on the famous "Death Train" to Bolivia, then on to Peru, later hitchhiking through Chile and Argentina. Paulo's travels take him farther to the famous Dam Square in Amsterdam filled with young people wearing vibrant clothes and burning incense, meditating and playing music, while discussing sexual liberation, the expansion of consciousness, and the search for an inner truth. There he meets Karla, a Dutch woman in her twenties who has been waiting to find the ideal companion to accompany her on the fabled hippie trail to Nepal. She convinces Paulo to join her on a trip aboard the Magic Bus that travels across Europe and Central Asia to Kathmandu. They embark on the journey in the company of fascinating fellow travelers, each of whom has a story to tell, and each of whom will undergo a personal transformation, changing their priorities and values along the way. As they travel together, Paulo and Karla explore their own relationship: a life-defining love story that awakens them on every level and leads to choices and decisions that will set the course for their lives thereafter.
