Set in 2011, this is basically the story of the Arab Spring told from the viewpoint of several characters: a man in high authority in the Egypt government with a daughter who sympathizes with the revolution, a young teacher brought into the revolution with a boyfriend who is an engineer in a local factory also a revolutionary leader; a middle-aged Copt man with a terrible marriage who falls in love with his devoted Muslim maid; and Nourhan, a television personality who uses her Islamic religion, her good looks, and her personality to further her career, and a driver whose medical student son is killed by the police who are found innocent.

The writing style in this book is straightforward and easy to read explaining a very complicated situation. The story tells of torture but also tells of great love and dedication to a cause. This is also a book of revenge especially following the story line of the man whose son was murdered. The ending of the novel shows the cycle of revenge.

Very interesting. Obviously written by an extremely talented author who understand Egyptian culture. ( )

És una novel·la coral, on cadascun dels personatges representa diferents maneres de viure la revolta que hi va haver al Caire, el 25 de gener de 2011, quan desenes de manifestants ocupen la plaça Tahrtit demanant la sortida del poder de Mubarak, els dies següents i finalment la repressió. La publicació d’aquesta novel·la està prohibida a Egipte. ( )

Il Cairo, 25 gennaio 2011, venticinquemila manifestanti in rivolta contro Mubarak occupano piazza Tahir. Mentre sbocciano storie d’amore e si infiamma la passione politica, Khaled, un giovane attivista, viene assassinato dai militari. Un delitto perpetrato alla luce del sole, eppure avvolto dal mistero. La sua ragazza, Dania, studentessa di Medicina nonché figlia del capo dei servizi segreti ‘Alwani, assiste impietrita all’esecuzione. In piazza, in mezzo alla folla, ci sono anche Asmaa e Mazen. Asmaa è un’insegnante di inglese che si rifiuta di indossare il velo e di contribuire a un sistema scolastico corrotto. Mazen è il figlio di un attivista degli anni settanta e lavora come ingegnere in un cementificio. Anche il più riluttante Ashraf, la cui casa si affaccia sulla piazza, si lascia coinvolgere nelle proteste. Di famiglia copta, nei giorni della Rivoluzione si ritrova solo con la domestica Ikram: la moglie si è rifugiata lontano dal centro città a casa della famiglia paterna. I personaggi messi in scena da Aswani si ritrovano a un bivio e sono chiamati a compiere scelte delicate. Ma la Rivoluzione, come Saturno, divora i suoi figli, soprattutto in una repubblica che è repubblica solo per finta.
