Ik kan maar niet bedenken hoe ik dit boek moet beschrijven. Het is hardvochtig en hartverscheurend, rauw en prachtig, alle tegenstellingen die er zijn kan ik wel benoemen.
Julia Powers is een verpleegkundige die aan het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werkt in een ziekenhuis in Dublin. Zij is van de ene op de andere dag verantwoordelijk voor 3 patiënten die moeten bevallen maar ook lijden aan de Spaanse Griep. Er is een kleine kamer voor deze drie patiënten en een soort van keukentje. Dan krijgt ze hulp van Bridie Sweeney, een jonge vrouw die is op gegroeid in een tehuis voor arme weeskinderen door de nonnen die ook het ziekenhuis onder hun hoede hebben. Bridie is een harde werkster en een slimme meid en algauw zijn Julia en Bridie helemaal op elkaar ingespeeld. In een periode van drie dagen worden er baby's geboren, sterven er moeders en baby's en ontwikkeld zich een hechte vriendschap. En dan slaat het noodlot toe.
