I was pleasantly surprised by how much I loved this book! From reading the description I was excited about the inclusion of different types of characters that aren't always represented in fiction books. The story was quite unique and the author really brought the scenery and characters to life, which I enjoyed. Lots of descriptive imagery really made it quite easy to visualize the setting of downtown LA as well as the main characters. The middle is a bit dry at parts and it did take me a bit to finish the entire book due to the few mistakes I found (but this was a review copy) but I'm so glad I did as it's one I will likely never forget and recommend to others. This was a beautiful ride. I asked for an early review copy mostly because the cover was beautiful and I honestly don't regret it.

For the first page I felt immerse in the world and the life of Virgilio. The magical realism part was really interesting, immersive and just very cool. Santería is one of those things that I'm kind of familiar with because I'm from Latin America so reading about it and in this form was just wonderful.

The characters were great, and the voice of the protagonist cool to follow. I'm not the biggest fan of the first-person pov but this one was really well-made and unique. I loved Virgilio and I could feel all his emotions, I like the inclusion of Concha (as a trans person myself I appreciate trans characters) although I didn't like her as a person (?). Beatrice was lovely, and so was Sexto (his ending was just.... shocking, sad, terrible, my poor little boy). I hated Anne and Beatrice's father so much.

I loved the exploration of the emotions, of an artist life, the gentrification, the Santería.... Those were wonderfully explored and it made the story more compelling to read.

To be honest, at first I wasn't sure where the story was going but then I just didn't care anymore because I was invested in the characters and their journey itself.

Overall, a great book, specially for character-center readers.

The early copy I received had some typos and so some parts were weird, tho. ( )

'The Savior of 6th Street is a good, solid novel in every sense of the word. There’s twists and turns, action and pathos. Art, voodoo priestesses, and criminal overlords. This has it all.'

'A philosophical whodunit of the new millennium that is both elegy and prayer, The Savior of 6th Street proves that Ortega-Media is as much an artist as his young protagonist. Read this book!' —Lisa See, author of The Island of Sea Women & Shanghai Girls

‘Gritty and unexpected…The Savior of 6th Street is Orlando Ortega-Medina’s lucid and engrossing new novel about a sinewy young man growing up in Los Angeles’s dark, 1980s underworld.’
