At first I didn't think I would like this book but persisted because it had such good reviews. Soon I was completely absorbed. I believe this novel is based (loosely) on a true event: the sister of an adolescent murderer is the sole survivor of the family. The author imagined what might have happened to this tragic protagonist. It's a painful story because it's not an easy one: too close, perhaps, to reality. The author's writing delivers a sense of numbness, of suspension, in the characters that I found compelling. I found the premise of this book to be extraordinarily interesting; however, I didn't find that it fulfilled its early promise. It seemed to plod along without any particular insights into Cady's personality. The husband was an enigma to me, and his relationship with his mother was vaguely disturbing. I was left feeling disappointed that there wasn't more substance to this book. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

To those who meet Jana Thomas, hers seems a perfect life, with a beautiful home, a successful career as an ER doctor, a loving husband, and a darling six-year-old son named Evan. But inside, Jana is crumbling. Evan's seemingly normal all-boy tendencies are escalating her motherly worry into something close to hysteria, threatening her job, her marriage, and even her relationship with her son. The real source of Jana's disintegration is a past she has kept buried for sixteen years. When that past begins to bleed into the present, Jana is forced to plunge into the emotional whirlpool she left behind-with results that are shattering, profound, and wrenchingly moving. Reminiscent of Sue Miller and Jane Hamilton, Cai Emmons's extraordinary first novel strikes a fine balance between keen psychological observation and page-turning momentum. Jana's son, Evan, is showing signs of aggression, and Jana is terrified that her hidden past is about to come crashing down on her.
How the author, Cai Emmons, draws a picture of one mother's brief dip into madness is terrifying, and oh so real. Terrifying, because--as a mother--I relate to the main character's feelings of confusion, doubt, and sometimes faulty thinking. We only want what's best for our children, and we want to protect them at all cost.
Read this book if you love how words paint pictures on a page, if you appreciate believable family dynamics, or if you like being drawn from page to page to find out how the main character moves through her world and makes the choices she does, and ultimately how she grows and forgives. ( )
