Dzaowan | Feb 15, 2024 |   Nunca habia leído el Incompleto Mahabharata (que tiene unas 100,000 estrofas o aproximadamente 8 veces la duración de la Ilíada y la Odisea de Homero combinadas, lo que la convierte en una de las composiciones escritas más largas del mundo, sin mencionar que es poco probable que alguna vez pase cerca para leerlo) es difícil revisar adecuadamente una versión abreviada. Sin embargo, puedo hacer algunos comentarios. Narayan convierte esta extensa obra en unas 179 páginas, una hazaña sorprendente, y produce una historia muy bien escrita y entretenida. Sin embargo, esto tiene un costo, ya que muchos de los diálogos más esotéricos se han eliminado, dejando la historia y la trama fundamentales, sin muchas de las ideas filosóficas que lo convierten en un texto religioso rico. This comes at a cost, however, as many of the more esoteric dialogs have been removed leaving the fundamental story and plot, without much of the philosophical ideas that make it a rich religious text. Maha (a prefix indicating greatness) Jaya/Bharata (Great victory) is primarily an epic tale of the conflict between factions of a royal family (The (Good) Pandavas and the (Bad) Kauravas) who are at war with each other on a supernatural, mystical and godly scale. Intertwined with this basic plot are philosophical, spiritual and historical musings on life, love, family, respect, duty, vengeance and forgiveness (amongst many others) all conveniently abridged in a palatable retelling of the huge Sanskrit scripture.
Since it is a retelling and heavily summarised, it would be unjust to judge this as a proper novel. Instead, I see it almost as non-fiction and a gateway to a layman's understanding to the roots of Indian culture. With this in mind, it isn't a really knock your socks off read but it is a really interesting and educational adaptation and definitely worth a read: 3/5 (
