When fourteen-year-old Sophie Stone moves from Los Angeles to her parents' dreary hometown of Mythic, Massachusetts, she discovers that she, like many of the town's earlier inhabitants, is a witch, and that she and her coven must identify the evil-doer in their midst before serious damage is done.

While the red herring and the real evil witch aren't difficult to figure out, this is a fun read with some dialogue that would make you spit coffee all over the place if you were reading it at the time. ( )

Sophie's in for a rough year.

Not only have her parents decided to move across the country, but they're heading to the hometown of her father, Mythic, Massachusetts, a popular destination spot for horror fanatics.

She has no desire to be away from Los Angeles and couldn't be less interested in her parents' and the town's horror obsession.

However, she's about to change her mind. Sophie soon meets a group of girls who have the power to create anything their hearts desire. And they recognize the same characteristics in Sophie. Before long, they realize they must combat the evil witch who's creating the freak storms in town.

If you're interested in witchcraft, don't miss this one! ( )

Sophie Stone - you know who she is, right? Tthe daughter of horror film director Spooky Stone and that ex-model? Well she's moving to Mystic, Massachusetts. It seems her parents are getting involved with some campaign to save the town. Sort of Steven King-like, you know, to bring attention to Mystic as being the birthplace of the famous Spooky Stone? Of course, he's not Stephen King -- his movies are more B-horror, but he's going to base his next movie on the witches of Mystic. It should all be great fun.

Except Sophie didn't want to leave sunny Hollywood, CA, where being a rich kid with famous parents didn't make her stand out: California, where she was normal. Mystic is dreary, rainy, boring, and a fashion desert. The teachers at her new school seem out to get her, and some boy's psychotic girlfriend definitely is. The only bright spot in the whole deal is the three girls who befriend her... the catch: they seem to think Sophie's a witch.

In one word: shallow. It's like eating cotton candy that leaves a nasty, sour aftertaste. Sophie is nice enough, but the supporting characters are either too stereotypical, or not enough so. The "evil" character is more appealing than the "good" group, and by the time the book ended, I didn't really like Sophie, either. I really hope there's no sequel. ( )

This was a feather-light, enjoyable tale of a teen who is transplanted from glamorous LA to the sticks (i.e., the fictitious town of Mythic, Massachusetts). Possibly based on Salem, MA, Mythic is a hotbed for witches and the occult.

At first, the protagonist came across as spoiled and unlikable, but then the plot took over and her personality improved. She finds herself at the heart of a group of practicing witches. With enjoyable overtones of teen movies, she falls for the cool bad-boy hunk who smokes clove cigarettes, while a sweet geek pines from the sidelines.

The story ends with an exciting twist. Overall, this is a fluffy, entertaining read. ( )
