Depending on which version you have, this is either the 2nd or 3rd of the Gerin the Fox series. For most people, this will be the 2nd book, after Werenight. Gerin and his friends survived the barbarians in Wereknight, and now face new challenges. Along with his companion Van of the Strong Arm, Gerin has to fend off challenges from nearby barons while defending against strange monsters. This is a great mix of fantasy and almost historical fiction. This was so good, it actually inspired a line of metal miniatures featuring the main characters based on the cover art by Larry Elmore. Gerin is a great character with a few flaws, including his lack of training at wizardry, which sometimes produces amusing results. If you see my other reviews you'll see I rarely give 4 stars, but these books are really good. ( ) I'm a lover of this genre, so it takes a lot to disappoint me. If there are swords, I'm pretty much sold (yes, I realize that's a little phallic). Having said all that, I found this a bit plodding. I had to drag myself through it. I couldn't really put my finger on it. The story was fairly interesting, and I hesitate to pin it on the writing as I've enjoyed Turtledove's alternate history work, but I think it has to be. He just kept reminding me of things like I was a 5 year old, and I might forget that the main character was thoughtful. Because I'm a sucker, I'll probably try another in the series, just to confirm my conclusions. Stay tuned. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

A great leader rises when forced to defend his troubled lands against an onslaught of monsters in the second book of this remarkable fantasy series featuring Gerin the Fox Peace in the North has been fragile and tentative in the five years since the terrible Werenight, when the light of four full moons transformed men into beasts. Now cut off completely from the Elabon Empire, the land is in violent dispute, squabbled over by minor barons hungry for greater power. Gerin the Fox is one of the few who stand firm against the encroaching chaos, but his own life has been violently shaken, first by a heartless betrayal and then by the kidnapping of his young son. Having angered a vengeful deity, he cannot look to the gods for support. Yet it is Gerin to whom the people must turn when an earthquake tears their land open, undoing an ancient warding spell and releasing a host of ravaging beasts from the dark underground. The stunning sequel to Werenight, Hugo Award-winning author Harry Turtledove's Prince of the North is a magnificent work of fantasy fiction. The master builder of wondrous worlds and alternate histories works his literary sorcery once again in this richly imagined tale of war, magic, gods, and monsters.
