Deze bespreking was geschreven voorLibraryThing lid Weggevers. Tempest Cursed is a Wuthering Heights retelling. I haven't ever picked up Wuthering Heights, so I can't really judge that part. The atmosphere created by Lannon is beautiful. I love novels set by the sea and I could almost feel the salty breeze at times. For the first half of the book, Hake and Pearl are young children so it feels a bit middle grade at times and it has a rather slow-moving pace. The second half of the book, the main characters are older and the relationship between them develops as Pearl learns more about her mother's side of the family which was a nice change, but by that time I had to force myself to finish the book from the first half of the novel dragging. While not a book for me, I do recommend giving this read a try if you enjoy slower-paced, atmospheric novels. Thank you KC Lannon for providing me an e-arc to read and honestly review. Deze bespreking was geschreven voorLibraryThing lid Weggevers. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a review. What do you get when you mix monstrous old gods with a Gothic classic? This wonderful book! I don't read a lot of retellings, only because I can't always separate them from the original stories and give them a fair chance. I have not read Wuthering Heights in years, and while I remember the general story, I felt it was safe to try this retelling. I'm really glad I did. I could see some similarities, as advertised, but the story stood on it's own in all its twisty glory. I think my favorite part of the book is the atmosphere. Lannon manages to draw you into the book so that you see the grey, gloomy clouds and smell the sea and the feel the salt spray. It's very moody and engrossing. Then there are the characters. One of the main characters, Pearl was easy to like, but even better, at times she was easy to dislike, making her more real. And Hake? My heart hurt for what he endured and the choices he faced. I like that most of the characters were very human and flawed. I also liked how Lannon delved into Pearl's mother. It would have been easy to paint her as eccentric, but Pearl needed more answers, even if she doesn't like everything she finds. The only issue for me was that it does have its slow spots. However, it is a wonderful story that I think everyone should hear. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

Tempest Cursed is a young adult fantasy book with Scottish mythology. I have to say I didn’t know a lot about it therefore this novel was a very pleasant read. Relationship between Pearl and Hake is really well written and the way how Hake’s nature was it reminded me life isn’t easy.
After all it was an interesting retelling of the original, with some dark elements, spiced up with mythology. ( )
