Meet the Allan family in this tale about the typical challenges that a very atypical family encounters while fending off the attacks of vampires, werewolves, demons, and more. It's a series about retired monster hunter Fredrick, his wife Deloris, and their two children Geoff and Vivian. As Fredrick works to put his monster hunting days behind him, his two kids insist on joining the family business. But ghosts from the past refuse to stay dead and conspiring forces lurk in the shadows all leading to a massive showdown with foes supernatural and natural alike! Niles' writing is often spotty. I truly enjoyed his first [b:30 Days of Night, Vol. 1|831829|30 Days of Night, Vol. 1|Steve Niles|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1178747918l/831829._SY75_.jpg|280664] book, but other stuff I've read has impressed me much less. This one, I quite enjoyed. While it does get dumb when the mom starts hunting the kids, and Dante's allegiance turns on a dime, and the kids manifest powers just as it becomes very convenient for them, overall, the writing was fun.
So, let's talk about Damien Worm's art. It's sketchy, imprecise, and not something I should enjoy at all, and yet, I absolutely love it. It's dark and murky, and for all its sketchiness, there's a fantastic specificity of detail that just blows me away.
As I said, I saw the trailer for the series first, but I'm always one to read the source material first, whenever possible. Now I can go see if they've done half as good a job on the series as Niles and Worm did here. ( )
