Lots of great illustrations of Merovingian art and architecture. The caveat for this book is that it is not really of book about the politics, culture, economy or society of the Franks, but civilisation narrowly conceived as art and architecture. Anyone seeking a general history of the Franks pre-800 should look elsewhere. The perspective on art and architecture is related to issues of stylistic development and connoisseurship, rather than situating those artifacts in their social, economic or cultural context. This is, of course, a product of the late 1960s and will not satisfy the student of the new century. geen besprekingen | voeg een bespreking toe

"Francia or Frankia, also called the Kingdom of the Franks or Frankish Kingdom (Latin: regnum Francorum), Frankish Empire, Frankish Realm or occasionally Frankland, was the territory inhabited and ruled by the Franks during the Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. Under the nearly continuous campaigns of Pepin of Herstal, Charles Martel, Pepin the Short, Charlemagne, and Louis the Pious?father, son, grandson, great-grandson and great-great-grandson?the greatest expansion of the Frankish empire was secured by the early 9th century."--Wikipedia.
