"Plato of Athens, who laid the foundations of the Western philosophical tradition and in range and depth ranks among its greatest practitioners, was born to a prosperous and politically active family circa 427 BC. In early life an admirer of Socrates, Plato later founded the first institution of higher learning in the West, the Academy, among whose many notable alumni was Aristotle. Traditionally ascribed to Plato are thirty-five dialogues developing Socrates' dialectic method and composed with great stylistic virtuosity, together with the Apology and thirteen letters. The four works in this volume recount the circumstances of Socrates' trial and execution in 399 BC. In Euthyphro, set in the weeks before the trial, Socrates and Euthyphro attempt to define holiness. Socrates is waarschijnlijk na Jezus de meest bekende ter dood veroordeelde uit de geschiedenis. IN dit tweede deeltje van het verzameld werk staat de figuur van Socrates centraal die veroordeeld wordt, een verdedigingsrede houdt waarbij hij ervoor pleit dat de staat om hem te eren hem gratis eten geeft en vervolgens als hij ter dood wordt veroordeeld aan zijn vrienden uitlegt waarom hij niet wil proberen om onder het vonnis uit te komen. De tekst is in dez evertaling goed te lezen, maar het betoog van Socrates over de ziel in de dialoog Phaidros maakt een erg vreemde indruk als je beseft dat hij dan nog maar kort te leven heeft. Vreemd dat iemand die onverschillig tegenover de geneugten van het leven staat zo gepassioneerd over de filosofie kan praten. Een beetje wereldvreemd zou ik zeggen, maar ik ben dan ook Socrates niet.
