Green, van (onder andere) het geweldige Een weeffout in onze sterren, Schildpadden tot in het oneindige en Paper towns, stopt met het schrijven in geheimtaal. Wat dat betekent kan je lezen in zijn nieuwste boek. Waar het in het kort op neerkomt is dat hij nu non-fictie schrijft in de plaats van fictie. Wat enorm jammer is want Green is echt een geweldig goede fictieschrijver. Gelukkig is onze ‘troostprijs’ ook niet slecht: hij blijkt ook geweldig goede non-fictie te kunnen schrijven. Oef!
In Hoe is het antropoceen je tot nu toe bevallen recenseert John allerlei fenomenen en voorwerpen, typisch voor de wereld waarin wij leven. Hij geeft sterren aan dingen die voor hem op de één of andere manier belangrijk zijn (geweest). Eerst deed hij dit in zijn super populaire podcast, nu is er ook het boek. Ik geeft het trouwens 4 sterren ;)
Op de één of andere manier slaagt John Green er in om onpersoonlijke dingen (de komeet Halley, Diet Dr Pepper, zonsondergangen of het qwertytoetsenbord) persoonlijk te maken. En ze zo neer te schrijven dat ze je raken. Zonsondergangen recenseren is complete nonsens, behalve als je John Green himself bent. Het universele maakt hij kleiner, behapbaarder en omgekeerd.
Net als in zijn fictieboeken spat het vertelplezier van elke pagina. Als verteller weet hij je op het puntje van je stoel te kluisteren, wijzer te maken, te doen lachen en te onderlijnen. Ik heb veel onderlijnd: weetjes, grappige feiten, wondermooie zinnen, boeiende gedachtegangen. En de vele poëziecitaten zijn een fijn extraatje.
Het antropoceen zit vol tegenstrijdigheden, de mens is te machtig en op de één of andere niet machtig genoeg, maar zolang er mensen zijn als John Green blijf ik lezen, hopen, dromen. (
